“Accuracy on paper translates directly to stability on the ground; one mistake can ripple through the whole project.”

Gudakesha Patel, 27, is a dedicated Site Engineer working for a small residential construction firm in Hyderabad. Holding a Diploma in Civil Engineering, he has been in the field for five years, steadily building his practical knowledge. His journey into engineering was driven by a fascination with how structures are built and a desire for a stable, respected profession. He grew up in a middle-class family, where education was highly valued, and he felt a responsibility to contribute to the household income early on. This has instilled in him a strong sense of practicality and a diligent work ethic. His current role is multifaceted; beyond typical site supervision, he is tasked with the crucial responsibility of preparing Bill of Quantities (BOQs) for new tenders. This involves a deep dive into architectural PDFs, meticulously breaking down designs into measurable items according to IS 1200 standards, and then diligently tracking material usage – cement, steel, and finishing materials – in detailed Excel spreadsheets. He sees this dual role as an opportunity to learn the entire project lifecycle, from bidding to execution. He recently spent two weeks painstakingly calculating quantities for a new villa project, ensuring every brick and bag of cement was accounted for, a process that reinforced his belief in the importance of precise measurement. He is currently exploring ways to streamline his BOQ preparation, finding the manual conversion from PDF to Excel to be a significant bottleneck. His income of ₹6–9 lakh per year allows him a comfortable life, living with his parents, but he is focused on saving for future investments. He views his work not just as a job, but as a craft where attention to detail directly impacts the integrity and cost-effectiveness of the homes being built. He is driven by a desire for continuous learning, particularly in mastering new digital tools that could enhance his efficiency and accuracy, while remaining grounded in the fundamental principles of civil engineering and site execution.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Gudakesha's day typically starts around 7:00 AM with a quick breakfast and then he heads to the construction site, often arriving by 8:30 AM. The morning is spent inspecting ongoing work, coordinating with masons and laborers, and checking material deliveries. Around lunchtime, he might return to the small site office to review drawings for an upcoming tender, meticulously converting PDF plans into itemized BOQs in Excel. He spends a significant portion of his afternoon verifying site progress against his earlier quantity take-offs, updating his material tracking sheets. He often stays late, ensuring all daily records are accurate before heading home by 7:00 PM, sometimes reviewing technical articles or online forums related to civil engineering before dinner.

Lifestyle

Gudakesha lives in a comfortable but not extravagant apartment in a well-established residential area of Hyderabad, sharing the space with his parents and younger sister. His days are structured, starting early with a quick breakfast and then heading to the construction site or the small office of his employer. Evenings are often spent catching up on work, reviewing drawings, or updating his meticulous Excel sheets. Weekends offer a chance to unwind, usually involving a game of cricket with his local club or visiting family. He's saving diligently, with an eye on future financial stability and perhaps a down payment for his own place someday. He values his downtime but understands the importance of consistent effort.

Work life

As a site engineer for a small residential builder, Gudakesha's role is hands-on and demanding. His days are a blend of overseeing ongoing construction activities, ensuring quality and adherence to plans, and the critical task of quantity surveying for new tenders. This involves painstakingly converting architect PDFs into detailed Bill of Quantities (BOQs), item by item, using IS 1200 standards. He constantly cross-references site progress against these BOQs, tracking the consumption of key materials like cement and steel, and meticulously recording finishing item quantities in his Excel spreadsheets. The pressure is on for accuracy, as miscalculations can impact project costs and tender competitiveness. He works closely with the project manager and a small team of supervisors.

Relationships

Gudakesha maintains strong ties with his family, living with his parents and younger sister, who he feels responsible for. His closest friends are from his engineering college days and his local cricket team. He respects his project manager at work, viewing him as a mentor, but sometimes finds the pressure from management to deliver tenders quickly overwhelming.

How they decide

Gudakesha is a cautious and pragmatic decision-maker. He prefers to gather all necessary information, weigh the pros and cons based on practical outcomes, and often seeks advice from trusted colleagues or mentors before committing. He values evidence and demonstrable results, especially when it comes to technical matters.

How they sound

Speaks with a clear, measured tone, often using precise technical terms. His Telugu is fluent, but he switches to English for professional discussions. He tends to be direct and factual, avoiding overly casual slang in work settings. He might pause to think before answering complex questions, ensuring his response is accurate. He uses phrases like 'as per the drawings,' 'we need to verify,' and 'the quantities indicate.'

Questions & answers

  1. Looking at SiteSetu (https://sitesetu.app): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

This SiteSetu service sounds promising, especially the part about converting PDF drawings to BOQs with engineer verification and measurement sheets. My biggest problem is the manual conversion, which takes so much time and is prone to errors. If a simple house BOQ costs ₹2,500, that seems reasonable, especially with the 50% discount on the first project. For me to consider it a no-brainer, I'd expect this to cover small villa projects without much hassle. If it gets too complicated or the price for a standard villa project goes beyond ₹5,000, I might reconsider. I'd be willing to pay up to $75 per month if it were a subscription service that I could use for multiple projects throughout the year, but the current pricing seems to be per project, which is a bit different. For a per-project basis, a maximum of $50 (around ₹4,000) would be my limit for a standard residential project.
