“Every ping is a potential deal, every conversation a step forward. You just have to keep the momentum going.”

Devak Menon, 31, is the driving force behind 'TalentBridge Solutions,' a five-person recruitment consultancy based in Bengaluru. He founded the company four years ago after a stint at a larger HR firm, recognizing a gap for agile, responsive recruitment services tailored to the fast-paced startup ecosystem. His Bachelor's degree in Business Administration provided a foundational understanding, but his real education has come from the relentless hustle of building a business from the ground up. Devak lives with his parents and younger sister in Koramangala, a decision that allows him to channel a significant portion of his income back into the business and personal savings, reflecting his pragmatic approach to finances. He’s deeply invested in the company's success, often working late into the evening and on weekends to ensure client satisfaction and secure new business. His days are a whirlwind of candidate sourcing, client communication, and team management, with WhatsApp serving as his primary tool for real-time updates and quick negotiations. He recently decided to onboard a junior recruiter to handle initial candidate screening, a move aimed at freeing up his time for more strategic client acquisition, though he still finds himself jumping into conversations to ensure clarity and speed. Devak views time as his most valuable, yet most constrained, resource. He’s constantly seeking ways to optimize his workflow and that of his team, driven by a desire for efficiency and rapid growth. His income, while substantial, is largely reinvested, underscoring his long-term ambition over immediate personal gratification. He’s acutely aware of the competitive landscape and the need to maintain a reputation for speed and reliability, which he believes are his firm's key differentiators. This focus on operational efficiency and client responsiveness is central to his professional identity and the company's trajectory.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Devak's day typically begins around 7:00 AM with a quick scan of urgent emails and WhatsApp messages from overnight. After a brief breakfast, he heads to the office, often listening to a business podcast. The morning is a flurry of candidate screening calls, client follow-ups via email and LinkedIn messages, and team huddles to assign tasks. Lunch is usually a quick affair at his desk while reviewing candidate profiles. The afternoon is dedicated to client meetings (often virtual), negotiating terms, and problem-solving any issues that arise with ongoing placements. He tries to wrap up by 7:00 PM, but often finds himself responding to late-night messages until 9:00 PM, especially if a critical hire is on the line. He ends the day with a quick check of cricket scores before heading to bed.

Lifestyle

Devak lives in a comfortable, though not extravagant, apartment in Koramangala with his parents and younger sister, a setup that allows him to save significantly on living expenses while contributing to household costs. His days are packed, leaving little time for leisurely pursuits, but he squeezes in cricket matches with friends on weekends and attends local startup meetups when his schedule permits. He’s conscious about his health, trying to fit in a quick gym session or a run a few times a week, though often work takes precedence. Financially, he's focused on reinvesting profits back into the business and building a solid personal savings cushion.

Work life

As the founder of a growing recruitment consultancy, Devak's work life is a constant juggle. He's deeply involved in every stage of the recruitment process, from initial client pitches to candidate sourcing and final offer negotiations. His team of four relies on him for guidance and often for direct intervention to keep deals moving. The shared inbox and spreadsheets are functional but chaotic, leading him to frequently jump into email threads and WhatsApp chats to clarify points or push for decisions. He feels the pressure to maintain momentum and ensure every lead is followed up on promptly, as missed opportunities directly impact revenue.

Relationships

Devak maintains close ties with his family, who provide a stable home base and emotional support. His parents, a retired teacher and a bank manager, are proud of his entrepreneurial spirit. He has a core group of close friends from college, many of whom are also in the startup ecosystem, offering a valuable network for advice and shared experiences. His team members are loyal and dedicated, viewing him as a mentor and a decisive leader.

How they decide

Devak tends to be pragmatic and action-oriented in his decision-making. He values speed and efficiency, often making quick judgments based on his experience and intuition, especially when dealing with time-sensitive client requests. While he appreciates data and insights, he's not one for prolonged analysis paralysis. He'll often consult with a trusted colleague or friend if a decision has significant strategic implications, but ultimately trusts his gut and the immediate needs of the business.

How they sound

Speaks with a clear, energetic tone, often using a mix of formal business language and casual Hinglish, especially when excited or stressed. He tends to speak quickly when passionate about a topic, sometimes abbreviating words or using common startup jargon. He avoids overly technical terms unless necessary and prefers direct, action-oriented language. He’s not afraid to express urgency or mild frustration but maintains a generally positive and forward-looking demeanor.

Questions & answers

Devak Menon’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. What do you use today instead of RogerRoger (https://www.rogerroger.io) (a competitor, a spreadsheet, doing it by hand)? Compared with that, what would make RogerRoger better or worse for you, and what would keep you on your current option? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

Right now, we're juggling emails, LinkedIn messages, and a ton of WhatsApp chats, all managed through a shared inbox and spreadsheets. It's honestly chaotic. RogerRoger seems like it could seriously streamline things by bringing all those communications into one place. That's the biggest plus. What I'm not clear on is how well it integrates with our current client management or if it truly eliminates the need for spreadsheets for tracking specific candidate pipelines. If it can genuinely centralize everything and provide better team oversight without adding complexity, that would be a huge win. I'd be willing to pay around $50 per month, possibly up to $75 if it proves to be as seamless as it looks for our team.
