Background & daily life

A day in their life

Darrel's weekday typically begins around 6:00 AM with a personal workout or a run along Lady Bird Lake. After a quick, protein-rich breakfast, he dives into client check-ins and program adjustments. His mid-morning is usually packed with live client calls or small-group training sessions, often conducted via video conference. Lunch is a prepped meal, eaten while reviewing client progress notes. The afternoon involves more client work, content creation for social media, and administrative tasks like responding to inquiries and managing his schedule. He might squeeze in a quick coffee meeting with a fellow entrepreneur or head to a local gym for a personal lifting session before dinner. Evenings are for meal prep, planning the next day, or occasionally catching a live music show.

Lifestyle

Darrel lives a structured but active life in Austin. He rents a modest one-bedroom apartment, prioritizing his budget for business investments and experiences over lavish spending. His mornings are dedicated to personal training and workouts, followed by client sessions. Evenings often involve meal prepping, reviewing client progress, or catching a local band with friends. He's health-conscious, fueling his body with carefully planned meals and staying hydrated. While he enjoys the occasional craft beer, his discipline generally keeps him focused on his fitness goals. He saves a portion of his income but isn't overly frugal, believing in investing in himself and his business.

Work life

As an online strength coach, Darrel's work is his passion. He juggles client consultations, live small-group training sessions, and individual program design. His days are meticulously scheduled, blocking out time for client calls, content creation (short workout tips for social media), and administrative tasks. He relies heavily on his digital tools to manage his client base and schedule. The pressure comes from maintaining client engagement and results, constantly seeking new knowledge to improve his coaching, and managing the administrative side of his solo business. He thrives on the direct impact he has on his clients' lives.

For day-to-day tools, he often relies on recommendations from trusted peers or industry leaders he follows, preferring solutions that are efficient and integrate well with his existing workflow. He's not afraid to try new things if they promise a clear benefit but will quickly abandon a tool if it proves cumbersome or doesn't deliver.

Questions & answers

  1. What would stop you from trying Micro Calendar (https://microcalendar.com.au/) this month? Be specific about how you handle this today. Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

Right now, I'm not super worried about unifying my calendars since I mostly use my Google Calendar and keep my personal stuff separate. The biggest thing holding me back is the admin overhead of payments. I currently use a free scheduling link and handle payments separately, which works fine for now. If Micro Calendar could simplify that whole process, especially with Stripe integration, I'd be more interested. I'm aiming to increase my income, so if this tool demonstrably helps me get more clients or streamline payments, I'd consider it. My max would be $20 per month.
