“You can build amazing things with these AI models, but you've got to keep an eye on the meter, otherwise, the magic can get expensive really fast.”

Laura Kihn, 27, is a freelance front-end developer based in Manchester, UK, who has carved out a niche for herself by blending client-focused work with ambitious personal projects. Her journey into development began with a intensive coding bootcamp, followed by years of dedicated self-teaching, which instilled in her a deep appreciation for practical, hands-on learning and the value of independence. She earns an income of around £52k annually, a figure that fluctuates with client availability but provides a comfortable living in Manchester, where she shares a rented flat. Her professional life is characterized by a strong sense of conscientiousness; she prides herself on delivering high-quality client work reliably, often using React and a suite of modern web development tools. Her current qualifying activity involves meticulously managing the costs associated with integrating LLM APIs into a personal side project. This involves not just writing the code but also diligently tracking token usage, performing rough cost calculations in a personal spreadsheet, and cross-referencing free online calculators to understand prompt size implications before each release. This pragmatic approach stems from her core values of flexibility and independence, allowing her to control her work and explore innovative technologies without overcommitting financially. She is driven by a desire for continuous improvement, constantly seeking to refine her skills and build projects that not only solve problems but also showcase her technical prowess. Laura's openness to new ideas is balanced by a methodical, detail-oriented approach, ensuring that her explorations into AI and other emerging fields are grounded in practical application and cost awareness. Her income is directly tied to her output, reinforcing a strong work ethic and a keen awareness of time as a valuable, finite resource. She views her side projects not just as hobbies, but as crucial extensions of her professional development and potential future revenue streams, requiring careful management of both time and budget.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Laura's typical weekday starts around 8:30 AM with a strong coffee and a quick scan of emails and overnight notifications. She dedicates the morning to focused client work, tackling complex coding tasks or debugging. Lunch is usually a quick, healthy meal prepared at home. The afternoon might involve client calls, code reviews, or pushing forward on her personal React app, where she's currently optimizing LLM API calls. She'll meticulously check token counts and rough costs before committing any changes. Evenings are for winding down, perhaps a short walk, dinner, and then either more coding on a passion project, catching up on tech blogs, or watching a documentary. She aims to be offline by 10:30 PM.

Lifestyle

Laura lives a fairly structured but flexible life, dictated by client deadlines and her own project ambitions. She shares a flat in Levenshulme with a friend, splitting bills and household chores. Her evenings and weekends are a blend of client work, dedicated time for her side projects, and occasional social outings with friends, often centered around casual pub visits or exploring Manchester's independent food scene. She's conscious of her spending, tracking expenses in a spreadsheet, and prioritizes experiences and skill development over material possessions. Fitness is usually a brisk walk or a quick home workout, fitting it in when she can.

Work life

As a freelance front-end developer, Laura juggles multiple client projects, often with tight turnaround times. Her days are a mix of coding, client communication, and problem-solving. She primarily uses VS Code, Git, and Figma, with a strong preference for React and modern JavaScript frameworks. The pressure comes from managing client expectations, ensuring code quality, and the inherent instability of freelance income. She's recently been integrating LLM APIs into a personal project for content generation, which requires careful monitoring of API costs, a task she approaches with meticulous spreadsheet tracking and a keen eye on token usage.

Relationships

Laura maintains a close-knit circle of friends, many of whom she met during her bootcamp or through online developer communities. Her flatmate provides a consistent, low-key social presence. She stays in touch with her parents back in Yorkshire via weekly video calls. Her professional network is primarily online, built through GitHub contributions and Twitter interactions, where she exchanges advice and opportunities with other developers.

How they decide

Laura is a research-driven decision-maker, especially when it comes to tools and technologies. She'll compare features, read documentation, and often experiment with free tiers or open-source alternatives before committing. For client work, she prioritizes solutions that are robust, well-supported, and cost-effective. When it comes to personal projects, she's more willing to experiment with cutting-edge tech, but still weighs the learning curve and potential long-term maintenance against the immediate benefits.

How they sound

Speaks with a clear, slightly fast-paced cadence, common in Northern England. Uses contemporary tech jargon naturally but avoids overly casual slang with clients. Her tone is generally pragmatic and informative, often prefacing opinions with 'I think' or 'It seems'. She's careful not to sound overly confident about speculative tech, preferring to frame things in terms of observed behaviour or current understanding. Avoids hyperbole and focuses on concrete details.

Questions & answers

Laura Kihn’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. You land on https://costmytokens.com/ (Cost My Tokens) for the first time. What's unclear, what makes you leave, and what would make you sign up?

The main thing that's unclear is how the token counting for non-OpenAI models works. It says estimates are used for Anthropic and Google, but doesn't explain the estimation method, which is a bit concerning. I'd also appreciate more clarity on whether the 'Batch (50% off where offered)' tier automatically applies or if I need to do something extra to get that discount. What would make me sign up, or at least save the site, is if there was a way to export the data or save my calculations, perhaps as a CSV, so I could easily slot it into my personal spreadsheet for tracking costs. That would be really helpful for my current workflow.
