“The most satisfying progress is the kind you can clearly see, measure, and build upon, one deliberate step at a time.”

Omar Abt, 37, is a solo founder based in Berlin, Germany, operating in the indie SaaS space. Holding a B.Sc. in Business Informatics, he transitioned from a corporate role four years ago to pursue the autonomy and direct impact of building his own venture. His current primary activity involves meticulously crafting and publishing 'build-in-public' content, primarily X (formerly Twitter) threads, derived from his work. He uses Obsidian for note-taking and drafting, exporting .md files and then manually formatting them for X, a process he manages with a detailed spreadsheet for tracking posts and a manual checklist for formatting consistency. This deliberate, hands-on approach reflects his core values of simplicity, iteration, and accountability. His income of €92k/year is primarily reinvested into his business, underscoring his commitment to long-term growth over immediate personal gain. He lives alone in a minimalist apartment, prioritizing efficiency and focus in his daily routines. His high openness and conscientiousness scores manifest in his constant curiosity about new tools and methodologies, coupled with a rigorous, systematic approach to his work. He actively seeks to build a reputation within the indie hacker community, viewing his content as both a marketing tool and a personal accountability mechanism. Recent decisions have focused on streamlining his content workflow, exploring ways to reduce the manual overhead without compromising the quality or authenticity of his updates. He views time as his most valuable, yet finite, resource, and is constantly optimizing how he allocates it between product development and public communication.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Omar's day typically begins around 7 AM with a quick review of X and emails. He then dedicates a solid 3-4 hour block to deep work, usually coding or developing new features for his product. After a simple lunch, he shifts focus to content creation, meticulously drafting X threads from his Obsidian notes, ensuring each point is clear and formatted correctly. This often involves manual checks against his checklist. The late afternoon might involve responding to customer inquiries or engaging in online communities. Evenings are for winding down, perhaps with a tech podcast or reading, before preparing for the next day. He aims to finish work by 8 PM to maintain some semblance of work-life balance.

Lifestyle

Omar lives a focused, almost monastic existence in a compact, minimalist apartment in Prenzlauer Berg. His evenings and weekends are largely dedicated to his startup, with social life revolving around occasional meetups with other founders or tech enthusiasts. He prioritizes efficiency, often meal-prepping simple, healthy meals to save time. While his income is comfortable, he's frugal, reinvesting most of it into his business or saving for future development. He walks or cycles whenever possible, valuing physical activity and avoiding unnecessary expenses.

Work life

As a solo founder, Omar wears every hat. His days are a relentless cycle of coding, marketing, customer support, and strategic planning. He thrives on the autonomy but feels the constant pressure of sole responsibility. His current focus is on refining his build-in-public content strategy, meticulously crafting X (formerly Twitter) threads from his Obsidian notes. He spends hours ensuring each post is clear, concise, and accurately reflects his progress, even if it means manually checking formatting against a checklist. Coworkers are non-existent; his only 'colleagues' are the online communities he interacts with.

Relationships

Omar is primarily connected to the online indie hacker and developer communities. He has a few close friends from university who understand his entrepreneurial drive, but his closest 'relationships' are with online peers he exchanges advice with via X and Discord. His family lives in another part of Germany and supports his venture from afar, though they sometimes express concern about his solitary focus.

How they decide

Omar is highly analytical and research-driven, but also pragmatic. He tends to weigh options carefully, often creating spreadsheets or lists to compare pros and cons. He values simplicity and efficiency, preferring solutions that integrate well into his existing workflow. While he respects the opinions of trusted online peers, the final decision rests on his own assessment of long-term viability and personal control.

How they sound

Speaks with a measured, thoughtful cadence. His German accent is subtle but present. He uses precise language, avoiding jargon where possible unless discussing technical specifics. He tends to be direct and factual, with a dry wit that surfaces occasionally. He avoids hyperbole and overly emotional language, preferring to stick to the observable facts of his work and progress.

Questions & answers

Omar Abt’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. What do you use today instead of X Article Markdown Paste (https://xmdpaste.icy-cat.com/) (a competitor, a spreadsheet, doing it by hand)? Compared with that, what would make X Article Markdown Paste better or worse for you, and what would keep you on your current option? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

Currently, I export my Obsidian notes as .md files, then manually format them for X posts, keeping a spreadsheet for links and a checklist for consistency. X Article Markdown Paste seems to automate much of this manual effort, especially the image uploads and table conversions, which would be a significant time-saver. The main advantage would be reducing the overhead in my content creation workflow, allowing more time for product development. The main drawback would be introducing another tool and potential compatibility issues if X changes its editor frequently, though the description suggests this is managed. I'd be willing to pay up to $5 per month for a Pro subscription.
