“It's about finding the most reliable path from A to B, even when B seems buried under a pile of corrupted data.”

Alonzo Gorczany grew up in a modest household in upstate New York, where his fascination with computers began with disassembling and reassembling old family PCs. He pursued a Bachelor's in Information Technology at a state university, driven by a desire for steady, practical work that involved tangible problem-solving. Upon graduation, he secured his current role as a Desktop Support Analyst at a prominent public university in Boston, drawn by the stability and the intellectually stimulating environment. He's been in this role for three years, steadily building his expertise in managing the university's diverse IT ecosystem. His income of $58k, while modest for Boston, allows him to live comfortably and save a portion, albeit slowly, towards future financial goals. He’s pragmatic about money, preferring established, functional solutions over flashy new ones and carefully considering the long-term implications of any significant purchase or commitment. He sees time as a finite resource, both for himself and for the users he supports, which fuels his drive for efficient and effective solutions. He recently spent a considerable amount of time researching and implementing a more streamlined process for recovering user data from old laptop hard drives, including a detailed checklist for handling OST files, which has become a recurring task in his ticket queue, directly impacting his daily workflow and demonstrating his commitment to improving team processes.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Alonzo's typical weekday begins with a quick scan of new tickets over coffee before heading to campus. His commute involves a brisk walk to the T station. Once at his desk in the IT support office, he dives into the queue, triaging and addressing issues ranging from printer driver failures to corrupted email profiles. He spends a good chunk of his morning on a call with a biology researcher whose laptop unexpectedly died, meticulously following recovery steps for the OST file. Lunch is usually a packed sandwich eaten at his desk while reviewing a technical forum. The afternoon might involve remote troubleshooting for a professor in another building or assisting a new faculty member with their workstation setup, always referencing the team's documentation and collaborating with Sarah when a complex issue arises before the day ends with a final ticket review.

Lifestyle

Alonzo shares a rent-controlled one-bedroom apartment in Jamaica Plain with a college buddy, splitting utilities to save money. His evenings typically involve cooking a simple meal, decompressing with some light coding practice or playing strategy video games, and occasionally catching up with friends for trivia night at a local pub. He prioritizes saving for a down payment on a condo but feels the Boston market is perpetually out of reach. He walks or takes the T to work to avoid parking hassles and costs, and his health routine is fairly standard, focusing on regular meals and occasional walks.

Work life

His days are a constant flow of tickets in the ServiceNow queue, balancing urgent requests from irate faculty with routine software installations for new hires. He works closely with his two immediate teammates, Sarah and Ben, sharing knowledge and sometimes dividing particularly thorny issues. He's become proficient in diagnosing a wide range of hardware and software problems, from network connectivity glitches to corrupted user profiles. The pressure to keep systems running smoothly for teaching and research is ever-present, especially during midterms and finals week.

Relationships

Alonzo maintains a close, though geographically distant, relationship with his parents back in suburban New York. His social circle in Boston is primarily composed of a few work colleagues and old college friends, with whom he shares a low-key social life. He values their practical advice and steady presence, preferring a small, reliable group over a large, transient one. His immediate team at the university, Sarah and Ben, act as his primary professional support system.

How they decide

Alonzo approaches decisions methodically. For work-related issues, he consults established procedures, team knowledge bases, and trusted online resources. When faced with a new problem, he’ll break it down into smaller parts, research potential solutions, and weigh the pros and cons of each before committing to a course of action. He prefers to have a clear process and reliable data to back his choices, especially when it impacts user productivity.

How they sound

Alonzo speaks in a clear, measured cadence, avoiding jargon unless explaining technical concepts to colleagues. His tone is generally calm and polite, even when dealing with frustrated users. He uses precise language and tends to preface statements with 'Based on the documentation...' or 'According to our standard procedure...'. He avoids overly casual slang and tends to be direct without being blunt.

Questions & answers

Alonzo Gorczany’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. Looking at WebbyAcad OST File Recovery Software (https://www.techjockey.com/detail/webbyacad-ost-recovery-tool): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

This tool seems reasonably priced at $39 for a personal license, especially considering the recurring nature of OST file recovery for our users. For that price, I'd expect it to be highly reliable and easy to use, without any hidden fees or limitations that aren't clearly stated upfront. If it reliably recovers data and can export to common formats like PST, that would be great. I wouldn't pay more than $39 for a perpetual license, as monthly subscriptions for this type of utility don't make sense for me.
