“The best ideas often hit you when you're moving; the trick is just remembering them later.”

Dean Leffler, 26, is an ambitious account executive carving out his niche in Chicago's competitive tech sales landscape. Armed with a Bachelor's degree and two years in his current role at a 150-person firm, he's driven by a desire for professional growth and financial independence. His income of $72k/year reflects his current success, but he's keenly focused on climbing the ladder. Dean embraces a hybrid work model, finding that his most productive thinking often happens during his signature walking calls around downtown Chicago. He’s developed a personal system where he leverages his iPhone, checking his Apple Health data for a general sense of his activity levels and using voice memos to capture follow-up ideas, client insights, or strategic thoughts that arise spontaneously during his walks. This approach stems from a core value of simplicity and efficiency; he prefers not to clutter his workflow with multiple specialized apps or paid subscriptions unless absolutely necessary, often finding free tools or his own manual methods sufficient. He shares a two-bedroom apartment in River North with a roommate, a setup that allows him to save aggressively towards a down payment on a condo, a significant financial goal. His apartment reflects his minimalist aesthetic – functional, uncluttered, and designed for ease of use. Dean is highly motivated by momentum, both in his career and personal life, constantly seeking ways to optimize his day and push forward. He’s naturally extraverted, enjoying the client-facing aspects of his job and networking opportunities, but also values his autonomy and the ability to structure his day in a way that maximizes his effectiveness. He’s made recent decisions to streamline his prospecting process, experimenting with different outreach cadences and dedicating specific blocks of time for follow-up, often during his walks. He views his current role as a stepping stone, constantly evaluating his performance and seeking feedback to improve, embodying a proactive approach to career development. His relationship with time is one of constant optimization, always looking for the most efficient path, while his relationship with money is geared towards future security and investment.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Dean's weekday typically starts around 7:00 AM. After a quick check of his Apple Health stats and a glance at overnight emails, he’ll grab coffee and head out for a walking call with a prospect in a different time zone, often along the lakefront path if the weather permits. Back at his apartment, he’ll spend a few hours on focused work, responding to emails and preparing for client meetings. Lunch is usually something quick he picked up nearby. The afternoon might involve an in-office meeting or more walking calls, interspersed with recording voice memos for follow-up tasks or ideas that strike him. Evenings are for unwinding, perhaps hitting a local brewery with friends or catching up on industry news before planning the next day’s schedule.

Lifestyle

Dean lives a fairly energetic, if somewhat chaotic, life in River North. His apartment is functional and sparsely decorated - a reflection of his preference for simplicity. He spends most evenings either catching live music at a small venue, exploring a new neighborhood on foot, or prepping for the next day’s calls. He's fairly health-conscious, prioritizing walking and occasional gym visits, but his diet is less disciplined. He’s saving aggressively for a down payment on a condo, meticulously tracking expenses in a spreadsheet. His social life is active but often revolves around networking or casual meetups with colleagues and friends from college.

Work life

As an account executive at a mid-sized tech firm, Dean navigates a hybrid schedule that demands flexibility. His days are a blend of remote work and in-office collaboration, but his most productive hours often happen on the move. He leverages walking calls to break up sedentary periods and gain fresh perspectives, especially when strategizing or following up on leads. He relies heavily on his iPhone for communication and note-taking, using voice memos to capture fleeting thoughts and action items. Coworkers appreciate his energy, though sometimes his rapid-fire ideas can feel overwhelming. The pressure to consistently hit quarterly targets is ever-present, driving his search for efficient workflows.

Relationships

Dean maintains close ties with his college friends, many of whom are also navigating early-to-mid career stages in Chicago. His roommate, Anya, provides a stable, low-drama household environment. He has a good rapport with his sales manager, who values his initiative, and a few key mentors within the company offer guidance. His parents, who live in the suburbs, are supportive but don't fully grasp the nuances of his tech sales role.

How they decide

Dean tends to be pragmatic and efficiency-driven. He'll research options quickly, favoring solutions that integrate seamlessly with his existing tools and habits. He's not afraid to try new things if they promise a tangible improvement in productivity, but he's also budget-conscious and prefers straightforward, intuitive interfaces over complex systems. Peer recommendations and observing what successful colleagues use can sway his opinion.

How they sound

Dean speaks with a brisk, energetic cadence, often using sales jargon naturally. He's generally positive and direct, avoiding overly formal language. His voice memos are usually concise, sometimes a bit rushed, capturing the essence of a thought before it escapes. He might use phrases like 'quick thought,' 'action item,' or 'need to circle back on this.' He tends to avoid dwelling on negatives and focuses on forward momentum.

Questions & answers

Dean Leffler’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. Looking at Waymate (https://indieup.me/apps/waymate): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

The free tier with up to 5 ideas sounds good, but I'd need unlimited ideas to make it a no-brainer. For that, I'd happily pay maybe $3 per month. If it went up to $5, I'd probably stop considering it. I'm looking for something simple that just lets me capture thoughts on my walks without any fuss, and seeing my movement and ideas connect is a cool concept. I'd expect to be able to sync my Apple Health data and have easy voice memo recording, which it seems to offer.
