“The most elegant solution is often the one that simply works, reliably and transparently, without demanding constant attention.”

Tara Steinert, 40, is the co-founder and CTO of a burgeoning automation startup based in Berlin. Holding a Dipl.-Ing. in Computer Science from a respected German technical university, she possesses a deep theoretical foundation complemented by years of practical experience. Her career trajectory has been marked by a consistent drive to optimize and automate complex processes, initially within larger tech firms before the entrepreneurial itch led her to co-found her current venture three years ago. She lives by the principles of pragmatism and lean operations, believing that true innovation lies in building robust, efficient systems that are also accessible. Her current focus is on developing AI agents capable of intelligent ticket triage and automated build checks, a challenging but crucial area for developer productivity. She champions transparency within her small, six-person team, ensuring that even non-ML specialists can understand the system's logic through tools like n8n, CSV exports, and meticulously maintained spreadsheet scorecards. Tara's decision-making is heavily influenced by data and logical analysis; she meticulously evaluates technical trade-offs, prioritizing long-term maintainability and scalability. While her income is modest compared to established corporate roles, the allure of equity and the direct impact she has on shaping technology fuels her dedication. She views time as a critical resource, both for her company's rapid development cycles and her personal well-being, which she guards through disciplined routines and a passion for city cycling. Her approach to building her company is akin to refining an algorithm: iterative, data-driven, and always seeking greater efficiency and effectiveness.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Tara's day typically begins around 7:00 AM with coffee and a quick scan of overnight system alerts and key performance indicators. After her cycle commute, she dives into a stand-up meeting with her team, discussing progress and blockers. The morning is often dedicated to deep work: architecting new agent functionalities, debugging complex integration issues, or refining the data pipelines for their scorecards. Lunch is usually a quick, healthy meal at her desk while reviewing technical documentation or industry news. Afternoons involve more collaborative sessions, code reviews, strategic discussions with her co-founder, and sometimes, investor calls. She aims to wrap up by 6:30 PM, often with a final check of critical systems before heading home for dinner and perhaps an hour of personal coding or reading.

Lifestyle

Tara lives in a bright, minimalist apartment in Prenzlauer Berg, filled with plants and functional furniture. Her routine is disciplined: early mornings involve a strong coffee and reviewing key metrics before cycling to the office. Evenings are often spent coding or strategizing, but she carves out time for city cycling tours on weekends, exploring Berlin's less-trodden paths. She's conscious of her health, favoring home-cooked meals and regular exercise. Financially, she's pragmatic, reinvesting most of her earnings back into the startup, understanding the long-term equity potential outweighs immediate personal luxury. Socially, she prefers deep conversations with a small circle of close friends over large gatherings.

Work life

As Founder-CTO of a lean automation startup, Tara's days are a whirlwind of technical architecture, team coordination, and strategic planning. She's deeply involved in wiring AI agents for ticket triage and build checks, a core product feature. Her team of five relies on her technical vision and hands-on approach. They use n8n for workflow orchestration, export data to CSV for analysis, and maintain spreadsheet scorecards to ensure the system's logic is accessible even to non-ML colleagues. The pressure is constant to innovate rapidly while maintaining operational efficiency and keeping the technology understandable. She spends significant time debugging complex agent interactions and refining evaluation metrics.

Relationships

Tara maintains close ties with her co-founder, a former university colleague, with whom she shares a deep professional trust. Her small team is a mix of experienced engineers and promising juniors, whom she mentors closely. Her parents, retired academics, are supportive but don't fully grasp the intricacies of her startup. Her closest friends are a mix of tech professionals and individuals from different fields, offering diverse perspectives.

How they decide

Tara approaches decisions with a blend of analytical rigor and pragmatic experimentation. She thoroughly researches technical options, weighing pros and cons based on efficiency, scalability, and maintainability. For strategic choices, she consults her co-founder and key team members, valuing diverse input but ultimately trusting her own well-reasoned judgment. She's not afraid to iterate or pivot if data suggests a different path, preferring a lean, evidence-based approach over dogma.

How they sound

Speaks with a clear, measured cadence, often using precise technical terminology but capable of simplifying complex ideas when necessary. Her tone is generally calm and analytical, rarely raising her voice. She avoids hyperbole and buzzwords, preferring direct, factual communication. Occasional use of German sentence structure or phrasing might slip in when she's deep in thought. She's articulate and thoughtful, but not overly effusive.

Questions & answers

Tara Steinert’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. What do you use today instead of Warp (https://www.warp.dev/) (a competitor, a spreadsheet, doing it by hand)? Compared with that, what would make Warp better or worse for you, and what would keep you on your current option? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

Currently, we manage our ticket triage and build checks using a combination of n8n workflows, manual analysis of CSV exports, and detailed spreadsheets for scorecards. We've found this approach makes the system's logic understandable to our non-ML teammates. Warp's promise of "factories as code" and automating the SDLC sounds interesting, especially the "evals, benchmarks, and self-improvement" aspect. However, I'm concerned about how easily we could integrate it with our existing n8n setup and if it would truly simplify things or add another layer of complexity for our small team. The pricing basis being "per agent run" is also unclear; without knowing the typical number of runs or the cost per run, it's difficult to estimate the total cost. Given our lean operation, I'm hesitant to commit significant resources without a clearer picture of the ROI. I would be willing to consider it if the cost were around $20 per month, billed monthly, but that's a very preliminary guess.
