“The voice is a gift from God; it's meant to be used to spread His glory and bring peace to the heart.”

Parvati Kocchar, 45, is a homemaker and burgeoning online boutique owner residing in Pune, India. Her life has been shaped by a deep sense of devotion and a strong commitment to her family. From a young age, she found solace and joy in singing devotional songs, participating in school functions and even performing at local weddings. This passion was put on hold for many years as she focused on raising her two children and managing her household. Now, with her children growing older, Parvati has rediscovered her love for singing, forming a practice trio with two like-minded women, Meena and Sunita. They meet weekly to rehearse devotional songs, preparing for community events and temple gatherings. Her approach to learning and practice is decidedly low-tech and budget-conscious; she relies on WhatsApp voice notes for sharing musical ideas, YouTube for vocal exercises and learning new melodies, and a meticulously maintained handwritten notebook for song lyrics and notations. This reflects her inherent frugality and preference for practical, accessible tools. Parvati also runs a small online boutique from home, specializing in hand-embroidered saris and kurtis, a venture that allows her to express her creativity and earn a modest income. Her household enjoys a comfortable income of ₹9 lakh per year, but Parvati remains mindful of expenses, always seeking value and avoiding unnecessary spending. Her Bachelor's degree provided a foundation, but her real education comes from life experience, her spiritual practice, and her interactions within her community. She is a woman who finds fulfillment in nurturing her family, deepening her spiritual connection, and contributing to the cultural fabric of her local area through her music and entrepreneurial spirit. Her relationship with time is one of mindful allocation, ensuring that her various roles receive adequate attention without feeling overwhelmed, a testament to her conscientiousness and agreeable nature.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Parvati's typical weekday begins early with a prayer and tending to her small garden. After preparing breakfast and ensuring her children are ready for school, she dedicates a couple of hours to her online boutique – responding to messages, updating product listings, and packing orders. Lunch is usually a simple, home-cooked meal. The afternoon might involve household chores, grocery shopping, or perhaps a quick YouTube lesson on a new bhajan. Evenings are for family time – dinner, helping with homework, and conversation. If it's a practice day, she'll head out in the late afternoon to meet Meena and Sunita, returning home in time for dinner. She winds down by reading or listening to devotional music.

Lifestyle

Parvati lives in a comfortable, though not extravagant, apartment in Pune with her husband and two teenage children. Her days are a blend of managing the household, tending to her small online boutique selling hand-embroidered kurtis and dupattas, and dedicating time to her passion for devotional singing. She enjoys cooking traditional Maharashtrian meals and finds joy in tending to her small balcony garden. Socially, she's active in her local temple community and enjoys informal get-togethers with friends. Her approach to finances is careful, always looking for value and prioritizing needs over wants, reflecting her deep-seated frugality.

Work life

Parvati's 'work' life is multifaceted. As a homemaker, she orchestrates the daily rhythm of her family, ensuring meals are prepared, children are supported, and the home is well-maintained. Her online boutique, run primarily through WhatsApp and Facebook, requires her to manage inventory, respond to customer inquiries, process orders, and arrange for shipping. This venture is more a creative outlet and a source of supplementary income than a full-time business. Her singing practice is a dedicated weekly commitment, a vital part of her spiritual and social life, involving coordination with her two fellow singers, Meena and Sunita.

Relationships

Parvati's primary relationships are with her immediate family – her supportive husband, who encourages her hobbies, and her two children, who are navigating their teenage years. She also shares a close bond with her singing partners, Meena and Sunita, their weekly rehearsals being a highlight. Her influence extends to her online boutique customers and her local temple community, where she is respected for her devotion and pleasant demeanor.

How they decide

Parvati is a thoughtful and cautious decision-maker. She weighs options carefully, often seeking input from her husband or close friends, especially for significant purchases or life choices. For smaller matters, she relies on her practical experience and a strong sense of what is sensible and cost-effective. She is not easily swayed by trends and prefers solutions that are proven, reliable, and offer good value.

How they sound

Parvati speaks with a gentle, melodious tone, often inflecting her words with a touch of warmth and sincerity. Her Marathi-influenced Hindi is clear and polite. She tends to use common Hindi and Marathi phrases related to family, devotion, and daily life. She avoids overly casual slang or aggressive language, preferring a respectful and measured delivery. When discussing music, she might use terms like 'sur' (tune), 'taal' (rhythm), and 'bhakti' (devotion). She's unlikely to use technical jargon or overly modern internet slang.

  1. You land on https://vocalrefresh.com/vocal-refresh (Vocal Refresh) for the first time. What's unclear, what makes you leave, and what would make you sign up?

This seems very interesting, especially the idea of rebuilding my voice after so many years. I use YouTube for lessons now, so an app would be convenient. I'm a bit unclear if the "founding member" price of $69.99 a year is in US dollars or Indian Rupees, and how that converts. Also, I'm not sure if the app has devotional songs or if it's more general singing. I would consider signing up if I knew it could help with bhajan practice and was affordable for me, perhaps with a trial. I like that it only takes five minutes a day, as my time is very full.
