“Every minute saved in a process is a minute gained for growth, or just a moment to breathe.”

Nathan Hermiston, 34, is a co-founder and the operational backbone of a bustling SAT and MCAT study lounge situated in Edison, New Jersey. His journey into entrepreneurship began after a career pivot from a promising, albeit unfulfilling, role in IT consulting. Armed with a BS in Information Systems, Nathan recognized a gap in the local market for a structured, reliable study environment. He partnered with a former classmate, pooling their savings and leveraging Nathan’s knack for systems thinking to establish the 40-seat lounge four years ago. The business operates primarily during evenings and weekends, catering to students preparing for high-stakes standardized tests. Nathan’s role is deeply hands-on; he meticulously manages member passes, seat assignments, and renewal cycles using a combination of Airtable and Google Sheets. He views these tools not just as record-keepers but as the central nervous system of the operation. His income of $82k/year reflects the business's steady, albeit not explosive, growth. He's driven by a core value of measurable results, constantly seeking ways to quantify success and identify areas for improvement. His background in information systems instilled a deep appreciation for efficiency and elegant solutions, which he now applies to the tangible world of student seating and membership management. He’s particularly interested in SaaS tools that can automate repetitive tasks and provide actionable insights, seeing them as crucial for scaling the business without proportionally increasing overhead. This focus on optimization is a direct response to the pressures of running a small service-based business with a lean team of one front-desk hire and two tutors. He recently implemented a new automated check-in system, a small but significant step towards reducing manual touchpoints during peak hours. Nathan’s personal life is grounded by his marriage to Sarah, and they are actively saving for a home. His commitment to clarity and customer experience stems from a desire to create a professional, supportive atmosphere for students, mirroring his own structured approach to life and work. He sees his work not just as a business, but as a contribution to the educational aspirations of students within the vibrant immigrant community he’s a part of.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Nathan's weekday typically begins around 7:00 AM. After a quick breakfast and reviewing overnight emails, he heads to the study lounge by 8:30 AM. The morning is spent on administrative tasks: updating Airtable with new member sign-ups, processing renewals, responding to parent inquiries via email, and coordinating with the front-desk hire for the afternoon shift. He might spend an hour reviewing usage data from the previous day to identify any bottlenecks. Around noon, he grabs a quick lunch, often a pre-packed meal. The afternoon involves a brief check-in with one of the tutors about student progress or any facility needs. He might also spend time researching new productivity software or refining a process document. By 3:00 PM, he transitions to preparing for the evening rush, ensuring the space is ready for students arriving after school or work. He often stays until 7:00 PM or later, overseeing operations and handling any immediate issues before heading home.

Lifestyle

Nathan lives with his wife in a comfortable two-bedroom apartment in Edison, a short drive from the study lounge. They're saving for a down payment on a house. His income supports a modest lifestyle; they prioritize experiences and future security over lavish spending. Weekday evenings are often dedicated to the lounge or catching up on administrative tasks. Weekends involve a mix of lounge operations, playing pickup basketball at a local park, attending community events, and occasional date nights. He’s diligent about tracking household expenses and sticking to a budget, reflecting his overall desire for control and predictability.

Work life

As co-founder and operations manager, Nathan is the engine behind the study lounge's smooth functioning. His days are a constant juggle between managing member inquiries, optimizing seat allocation in Airtable, ensuring the front desk runs efficiently, and troubleshooting any issues that arise. He works closely with his small team, fostering a collaborative but results-driven environment. The pressure is on to maintain high customer satisfaction and ensure consistent revenue, especially during peak exam seasons. He’s constantly looking for ways to streamline processes, often experimenting with new SaaS tools to improve efficiency and member experience.

Relationships

Nathan is married to Sarah, a graphic designer, who provides a supportive and grounding influence. They share a practical approach to life and finances. He maintains a close circle of friends from his university days, many of whom are also in professional roles. He feels a strong connection to the local Indian-American community, often attending cultural events and supporting local businesses.

How they decide

Nathan approaches decisions methodically. He gathers information, weighs pros and cons, and often seeks out data or testimonials to support his choices. He values efficiency and practicality, preferring solutions that offer clear benefits and integrate well with his existing systems. While he's open to new ideas, he's not impulsive and will research thoroughly before committing time or resources.

How they sound

Nathan speaks clearly and at a moderate pace, with a slight tendency towards technical or process-oriented language when discussing work. He avoids overly casual slang but is friendly and approachable. He's direct and gets to the point, especially when explaining operational matters. Questions & answers

Nathan Hermiston’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. Looking at TrackMyLibrary – Smart Library Management for Competitive Exam Libraries (https://www.trackmylibrary.in/): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

This TrackMyLibrary tool looks interesting, especially the automated fee reminders and seat management. My current system with Airtable and Google Sheets is functional, but it's definitely manual. The pricing is listed in Rupees, and I'm not sure how that translates directly to USD for my budget. If it offered something like $10 per month, I'd consider it a no-brainer for the potential time savings, especially with our limited team. However, if it were over $30 per month, I'd probably stop considering it. I'd expect the core features like seat allocation, student management, and those WhatsApp reminders to be seamless and require minimal setup.
