“The best code is the code that works, is understood, and doesn't break tomorrow.”

Anjaneya Khan, 33, is a co-founder and CTO of an 8-person tech startup based in Bengaluru, India. Holding a Bachelor's in Computer Engineering, he's spent the last four years immersed in the demanding startup ecosystem. His journey began not in a corporate ladder climb, but with a vision to build something impactful. He’s deeply hands-on, writing significant portions of the company's core codebase and architecting its technical infrastructure. His current responsibilities are a testament to his pragmatism and resourcefulness: he manages complex partner integrations, meticulously maintains OpenAPI definitions stored in GitHub, and oversees the development lifecycle. Spec validation is a critical, yet often manual, part of his workflow, typically handled during code reviews or via quick diffs, a consequence of prioritizing speed and frugality over dedicated monitoring tools. This approach reflects his core values of ownership and efficiency; he believes in building lean and iterating fast. Anjaneya is driven by a desire for tangible results and a deep satisfaction in solving complex technical challenges. His income of INR 35 lakh reflects his role and the startup's current stage, a figure he views as secondary to the long-term equity and potential of the venture. He's not driven by status symbols but by the intellectual challenge and the opportunity to build a lasting company. His relationship with time is one of constant pressure, always seeking to optimize it, while his approach to money is one of careful allocation, prioritizing essential investments for growth. He sees himself as a builder, constantly refining and improving, much like he refines his code and API specifications.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Anjaneya's typical weekday begins around 8:30 AM after a quick breakfast. He starts by checking critical system alerts and emails, followed by a stand-up meeting with his engineering team. The morning is usually dedicated to coding – tackling complex features or debugging critical issues. Lunch is often a quick affair at his desk. Afternoons involve more coding, architectural discussions with his co-founder, and managing partner integration challenges, often involving reviewing OpenAPI definitions in GitHub. He might spend an hour reviewing pull requests, ensuring spec adherence is part of the process. Evenings often extend past 8 PM, sometimes involving late-night debugging or planning for the next day, fueled by strong filter coffee.

Lifestyle

Anjaneya lives in a rented 2BHK apartment in Koramangala, Bengaluru, sharing it with his younger sister who is pursuing her Master's. His routine is heavily dictated by work, often involving late nights. Weekends are a mix of catching up on sleep, intense coding sessions, and occasional cricket matches with friends at a local ground. He's mindful of his spending, prioritizing investments in the startup over personal luxuries, though he enjoys good South Indian food. Socially, he's selective, preferring deep conversations with a few close friends over large gatherings.

Work life

As CTO and co-founder, Anjaneya's days are a whirlwind of coding, architectural decisions, and managing the technical roadmap for his 8-person startup. He's deeply involved in writing core logic, defining and maintaining API contracts, and ensuring seamless partner integrations. His current focus is on refining the OpenAPI specifications for their core product, a task he juggles with code reviews and quick manual checks against GitHub. The pressure to deliver features rapidly while keeping technical debt manageable is constant, especially with a lean team and limited resources.

Questions & answers

Anjaneya Khan’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. What do you use today instead of TrackAPI (https://trackapi.uk) (a competitor, a spreadsheet, doing it by hand)? Compared with that, what would make TrackAPI better or worse for you, and what would keep you on your current option? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

Currently, we're managing OpenAPI spec checks manually during code reviews or by doing quick diffs in GitHub. We don't have a dedicated monitoring tool. TrackAPI's automatic monitoring and email notifications sound appealing for keeping our API specs consistent and stable, which is a major pain point for us. However, I'd need to see how it handles multiple APIs and what kind of detailed diffing it provides. We're a lean startup, so if it's straightforward and effective, I might consider paying around $20 per month.
