“You've got to make every minute count, both in front of the camera and behind it. If you're not efficient, you're just falling behind.”

Leland Watsica, 33, is a Manchester-based creator and video editor who has carved out a niche for himself in the digital media landscape. After completing a college diploma in digital media, he spent a few years freelancing on smaller projects, honing his skills in video editing and motion graphics. This period instilled in him a deep appreciation for independence and efficiency, values that now underpin his current venture. Around seven years ago, he partnered with Chloe, a charismatic presenter, to launch 'The Northern Mic', a YouTube channel and podcast that has steadily grown by focusing on authentic storytelling and local Manchester culture. Their operation is lean, a two-person team working from a shared home office setup. Leland is the technical backbone, responsible for all post-production. His daily work involves extensive use of Adobe Premiere Pro, where he edits weekly episodes, crafts engaging intros, and integrates sponsor segments. He relies on a subscription to Motion Array for a consistent stream of assets, supplementing it with a few specific preset packs for recurring elements like lower thirds and transitions, which he finds crucial for maintaining brand consistency across episodes. His income fluctuates, typically falling between £35k-£50k annually, reflecting the unpredictable nature of self-employment in the creator economy. He's driven by a desire to build something sustainable and trusted, where audience engagement and loyalty are paramount. Recent decisions have focused on optimizing his workflow; he recently invested in a more powerful editing rig and spent considerable time researching and implementing new organizational strategies for his project files to save time during crunch periods. He views his work not just as a job, but as building a tangible asset and a platform for voices he believes in, all while striving for greater creative and financial autonomy.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Leland's typical weekday begins around 8:30 AM. After a quick breakfast and checking emails, he's usually at his editing desk by 9:00 AM. The morning is dedicated to the most demanding editing tasks for 'The Northern Mic's' upcoming episode – perhaps refining a complex interview cut or synchronizing multi-camera footage. He takes a short break for lunch around 1 PM, often a quick sandwich while scrolling through tech news. The afternoon might involve editing sponsor segments, creating intro animations using Premiere Pro and After Effects templates, or troubleshooting audio issues. If Chloe is available, they might have a brief sync-up call. By 6 PM, he aims to wrap up the main editing, but often finds himself doing final renders or uploading files until 7 PM or later, especially if there's a tight deadline.

Lifestyle

Leland lives in a well-kept, rented two-bedroom flat in Chorlton, Manchester, sharing with a friend who handles the channel's social media and community management. His routine is structured around content deadlines. Mornings often start with a strong coffee and a quick scan of tech news before diving into editing. Evenings are usually spent either working late or unwinding by watching football highlights or researching new audio interfaces. He's conscious of his finances, aiming to reinvest profits back into better equipment rather than extravagant spending, though he allows himself a new pair of trainers each season. Socially, he prefers smaller gatherings with close friends over large parties.

Work life

As co-founder and lead editor of 'The Northern Mic', a YouTube channel and podcast focusing on local Manchester culture and interviews, Leland's days are a blend of creative and technical tasks. He spends the bulk of his time in Premiere Pro, meticulously cutting footage, refining audio levels, and integrating motion graphics. His partner, Chloe, handles the on-camera hosting and outreach. They operate on a tight weekly schedule, with Tuesdays dedicated to filming, Wednesdays and Thursdays to editing, and Fridays for final reviews and uploads. The pressure to maintain consistent quality and audience engagement is constant, especially with sponsor commitments for the podcast segments.

Relationships

Leland's closest professional relationship is with Chloe, his co-host and business partner. They have a strong working dynamic built on mutual respect and shared vision, though occasional creative disagreements arise. His family, based in Leeds, is supportive but doesn't fully grasp the intricacies of his digital media career. He has a small circle of friends from his college days, some of whom are also in creative fields, providing a valuable sounding board for ideas and challenges.

How they decide

Leland is a pragmatic decision-maker. He thoroughly researches options, weighing pros and cons against his specific needs and budget. He values efficiency and reliability, often favouring solutions that streamline his workflow. While he's open to new technology, he's not an early adopter unless a clear benefit is demonstrated. Peer recommendations from trusted creator communities hold some weight, but the final decision is always based on his own analysis and practical testing.

How they sound

Speaks with a clear, slightly rapid cadence, typical of the North West. Uses a moderate amount of mild slang ('chuffed', 'proper', 'sound') but avoids overly aggressive or niche internet jargon. Tends to be direct and analytical in his explanations, often using analogies related to efficiency or technical processes. He's careful not to sound overly promotional when discussing tools, focusing instead on practical application and results. He'll often preface opinions with 'From my perspective...' or 'What I've found is...'.

  1. Looking at Spotlight FX (https://spotlightfx.com/): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

From my perspective, to be a no-brainer, I'd expect something around $15-$20 a month for this plugin, possibly with a lifetime option. If it went over $30 a month, I'd probably stop considering it. I'm currently using Motion Array, which gives me a lot of assets, so I'd need Spotlight FX to offer genuinely unique or significantly better workflow tools to justify the cost. I'm happy to pay up to $25 per month.
