“Every minute saved in operations is a minute earned for growth.”

Jyotis Kakkar, 28, is the driving force behind Artisan Home, a burgeoning D2C brand specializing in handcrafted home goods, based in the vibrant city of Bengaluru. His entrepreneurial journey began four years ago, shortly after completing his Bachelor's degree in Commerce. Frustrated by the lack of unique, quality home decor options available online at accessible price points, he envisioned a brand that could bridge this gap. Starting with a small investment and a clear vision, Jyotis meticulously built Artisan Home from the ground up. He operates with a deep sense of ownership, treating every aspect of the business as his personal responsibility. His income, an ₹18L annual owner draw and profit share, reflects the brand's steady growth, but it's a figure he constantly strives to increase through disciplined financial management and strategic reinvestment. Jyotis’s approach to business is characterized by a relentless pursuit of speed and efficiency. He understands that in the fast-paced D2C landscape, agility is key. This manifests in his hands-on management style, where he personally tracks vendor follow-ups, resolves order exceptions, and oversees content posting, often using a combination of WhatsApp, Google Sheets, and shared calendars. He recently made a conscious decision to streamline their scheduling process. Recognizing the time drain of manually copying recurring tasks, he’s been exploring ways to automate this, even if it means a slight upfront investment in a more integrated system. This move is driven by his core value of cash discipline; he believes that optimizing time is as crucial as optimizing expenditure. His passion for D2C ecommerce is evident in his constant learning, devouring industry blogs and analyzing competitor strategies on Instagram. While he enjoys the strategic side of business, he’s equally comfortable diving into the operational weeds, ensuring the small warehouse runs like clockwork and that customer orders are dispatched with minimal delay. His commitment to ownership extends beyond his own brand; he actively mentors aspiring entrepreneurs in local online forums, sharing his hard-won lessons.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Jyotis's day typically begins around 7:30 AM with a quick check of overnight sales and any urgent messages on WhatsApp. After a hurried breakfast and a strong cup of filter coffee, he’s at his desk by 9 AM. The morning is usually dedicated to vendor follow-ups and addressing any order exceptions that arose. He might spend an hour reviewing content drafts for Instagram with Priya or planning the week's social media calendar. Lunch is often a quick affair, eaten at his desk while reviewing sales reports. The afternoon involves deeper dives into inventory management, supplier negotiations, or brainstorming new product ideas. He tries to wrap up by 7 PM, but often finds himself back online for an hour after dinner to finalize tasks or respond to late-night customer queries.

Lifestyle

Jyotis lives in a rented 2BHK apartment in Koramangala, sharing with a college friend who works in tech. His days are packed, leaving little time for elaborate cooking, so he relies on a mix of home-cooked meals prepared on weekends and healthy tiffin services during the week. He’s disciplined with his finances, meticulously tracking personal expenses in a spreadsheet, a habit honed from managing the brand’s cash flow. Weekends often involve catching up on sleep, meeting friends for a quick coffee, or watching cricket matches, though he sometimes uses Sunday afternoons for strategic planning for the brand.

Work life

As the founder of 'Artisan Home', Jyotis is deeply involved in every facet of the business. His workdays are a constant juggle between strategic oversight and granular operational tasks. He spends significant time chasing down vendors for timely material delivery, resolving customer order exceptions that pop up unexpectedly, and coordinating content creation for their Instagram feed. The lean team means he’s hands-on with everything, from approving designs to ensuring warehouse operations run smoothly. The pressure to maintain cash discipline is immense, as every rupee spent is scrutinized.

Relationships

Jyotis maintains close ties with his family, particularly his mother, who often offers advice on business and life. His core support system includes his co-founder, Priya, who handles design and marketing, and his part-time assistant, Rohan. He also has a small circle of close friends from college, with whom he discusses business challenges and celebrates small wins. His interactions with vendors are professional but cordial, built on a foundation of mutual respect and timely payments.

How they decide

Jyotis tends to be pragmatic and data-informed, but also values speed. He will research options thoroughly if a decision has significant financial implications or long-term strategic impact. For operational improvements, he looks for solutions that offer immediate efficiency gains and are cost-effective, often leaning towards tools that integrate well with his existing workflow. He’s not afraid to try new things if the potential upside is clear, but he’s cautious about over-committing resources.

Questions & answers

Jyotis Kakkar’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. Think about your own work or business in this area: the product is a user-friendly platform designed to simplify your life by automating and scheduling tasks. What is the single biggest problem you have there right now? Be specific about what it costs you (time, money, customers) and what you have already tried.

The biggest problem? Honestly, it's the sheer manual effort of managing our schedules. Priya and Rohan and I are constantly copying and pasting recurring tasks, updating shared calendars for vendor follow-ups, and then double-checking everything. It's a huge time sink, easily eating up several hours a week that could be spent on actual growth. We've tried shared Google Calendars and templates, but it’s still very manual. This inefficiency costs us precious time and, frankly, I worry it’s leading to missed opportunities because we're bogged down in admin.
