“Every piece has a story, and my job is to find the next chapter for it, quickly and cleanly.”

Bas Ritsma grew up in a modest family in Utrecht, developing an early fascination with the tactile culture of sneakers and the narrative power of street fashion. He pursued a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, which equipped him with a foundational understanding of commerce, but his true entrepreneurial spirit ignited during his university years. Post-graduation, he worked briefly in retail logistics, finding the pace frustratingly slow and the opportunities for genuine connection limited. This experience solidified his desire for autonomy. Five years ago, he and a former classmate pooled their savings and a shared passion for rare streetwear to open their small resale shop in a less central, but characterful, Amsterdam neighborhood. They started with a lean operation, relying heavily on online platforms to reach a wider audience. Bas quickly learned the intricacies of marketplace dynamics, from eBay’s auction system to Vinted’s community-driven approach and Shopify’s direct-to-consumer potential. His early success was built on meticulous cataloging and a knack for identifying undervalued items. He’s always been drawn to systems that offer efficiency, understanding that speed in listing and selling is crucial for cash flow in the resale business. He recently navigated the challenge of bringing on a part-time helper, Lieke, and is currently focused on refining their inventory management process to reduce manual data entry. He views his business not just as a source of income, but as a curator of style and a participant in the circular economy, aiming for sustainable growth rather than rapid, risky expansion. His approach to money is pragmatic; profits are consistently reinvested, and personal luxuries are secondary to building a stable, scalable business.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Bas wakes around 8:00 AM, makes coffee, and checks his phone for overnight sales and messages from his marketplaces. After a quick breakfast, he heads to the shop. He might spend the morning photographing a batch of newly acquired vintage tees and sneakers, meticulously cataloging each item’s condition and details. Lunch is often a quick sandwich eaten at his desk while reviewing sales data. The afternoon could involve responding to customer questions, processing orders for shipment, or meeting with Lieke to delegate tasks and review inventory. He tries to leave by 6:00 PM, but often stays later if a large consignment needs immediate attention. Evenings are for dinner, relaxation, and perhaps some personal browsing of streetwear forums.

Lifestyle

Bas shares a comfortable apartment in the Jordaan district with his partner, a graphic designer. Their routines are structured but allow for spontaneity. Mornings often involve a quick espresso and checking marketplace notifications before heading to the shop. Evenings are a mix of preparing inventory, catching up on industry news, or exploring Amsterdam's vibrant nightlife with friends. He’s conscious about his spending, prioritizing reinvestment in the business but also saving for future travel and potential property ownership. Weekends are for sourcing new items at flea markets or catching up with friends.

Work life

Running the resale shop is a constant juggling act. Bas splits his time between sourcing unique pieces, meticulously photographing new arrivals, managing online listings across multiple platforms, and handling customer inquiries. His part-time employee handles some of the day-to-day tasks, but Bas is heavily involved in strategy and quality control. The pressure to consistently find desirable stock and price it competitively is ever-present. He spends a significant amount of time updating shared spreadsheets, trying to maintain order amidst the influx of inventory and sales data.

Relationships

Bas is in a stable, long-term relationship with his partner, who offers creative input on the shop’s visual branding. He maintains a close circle of friends, many of whom share his passion for streetwear and collectibles, often discussing new finds or market trends. His part-time employee, a student named Lieke, is reliable and has been with him for two years, forming a good working dynamic.

How they decide

Bas is generally methodical and research-oriented, especially when it involves business investments or significant purchases. He weighs pros and cons, often discussing options with his partner or trusted friends before making a final decision. For operational tools, he'll research alternatives, looking for efficiency gains and clear value, but is also sensitive to cost.

How they sound

Speaks with a calm, measured tone, often using slight Dutch inflections. His vocabulary is a mix of standard Dutch and industry-specific English terms related to fashion and e-commerce. He avoids overly casual slang unless among close friends but is generally approachable. He tends to use phrases like 'precies' (exactly) and 'weet je' (you know) to confirm understanding or emphasize a point. He’s not one for hyperbole.

Questions & answers

Bas Ritsma’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. What would stop you from trying Oly (https://oly-platform.com) this month? Be specific about how you handle this today. Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

The biggest thing that would stop me is the integration process itself. Right now, Lieke and I spend quite a bit of time manually photographing and listing items on eBay, Vinted, Marktplaats, and our Shopify. If Oly could truly automate that across all of them with minimal setup, that would be fantastic. We're always looking for efficiency. I'd need to see how easily it syncs our current inventory and how it handles updates. For pricing, I'd be willing to consider up to $75 per month, but that really depends on the setup and the time savings it actually provides. We need to ensure it's not creating more work than it solves.
