“Consistency and fairness are the bedrock of trust within any team; without them, even the best intentions can falter.”

Laila Nijland, 36, has carved out a niche for herself as an HR Business Partner at a bustling logistics company in Amsterdam. Her journey into HR was driven by a fascination with organizational dynamics and a desire to foster positive work environments. After completing her Master's degree in Human Resource Management, she gained experience in various HR functions before landing her current role four years ago. She shares her life with her partner in a well-organized apartment, valuing their shared routines and quiet evenings. Laila is financially responsible, meticulously budgeting and saving, viewing money as a tool for security and future experiences rather than immediate gratification. Her approach to work is deeply rooted in her high conscientiousness and agreeableness; she believes firmly in policy consistency and ensuring fair recognition for all employees. This manifests in her daily work, where she meticulously manages the company's recognition platform. She exports reports, spends significant time reconciling awarded badges against internal policy to guarantee equity, and then curates and reposts selected positive acknowledgments into the company's Teams channel to boost morale. This process, while effective in principle, is time-consuming and highlights her ongoing challenge of balancing manual oversight with efficiency. She is driven by a desire to see her colleagues engaged and motivated, seeing her role as crucial in maintaining a healthy organizational culture amidst the operational demands of the logistics sector. Her recent focus has been on identifying ways to improve the efficiency of these recognition reporting and dissemination processes without compromising fairness.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Laila's typical weekday begins with a quick check of emails and industry news over breakfast. By 8:30 AM, she's at her desk, reviewing her calendar and prioritizing tasks. The morning often involves meetings with managers to discuss team performance, recruitment needs, or employee relations issues. Around mid-morning, she dedicates time to her current focus: extracting reports from the recognition platform, meticulously checking badge allocations against policy guidelines, and then crafting concise updates for the company's Teams channel. Lunch is usually a quick affair, often a packed meal eaten at her desk while catching up on internal communications. The afternoon might include developing training materials, working on HR policy updates, or addressing urgent employee queries. She aims to wrap up by 5:30 PM, often reflecting on the day's progress and planning for the next.

Lifestyle

Laila shares a modern apartment in Amsterdam-West with her partner, a software developer. Their weekends are often spent exploring local markets, cycling along the canals, or visiting museums. She prioritizes a healthy lifestyle, incorporating a morning run three times a week and enjoying vegetarian meals. Financially, she's prudent, saving consistently for future travel and home improvements, but enjoys occasional splurges on quality homeware or a nice dinner out. Socially, she prefers smaller gatherings with close friends over large parties.

Work life

As an HR business partner at a mid-sized logistics firm, Laila navigates the fast-paced demands of a company with a significant operational workforce. Her days are a blend of strategic planning and hands-on problem-solving. She works closely with department managers to align HR initiatives with business goals, focusing on employee retention and engagement. The company's existing recognition platform is a key tool, but she spends considerable time exporting reports, cross-referencing award data against company policy to ensure fairness, and then manually re-sharing notable achievements on the company's internal Teams channel to boost morale. The constant need to bridge the gap between the platform's capabilities and her team's needs is a recurring challenge.

Relationships

Laila is in a stable, long-term relationship with her partner, who provides a supportive and grounding influence. Her close circle of friends, mostly met during her university years, are a source of shared experiences and advice. Within the company, she maintains professional but friendly relationships with department heads and her direct reports, earning their respect through her consistent approach.

How they decide

Laila approaches decisions methodically. She gathers data, consults relevant policies, and often seeks input from peers or her manager before committing. For work-related matters, she prioritizes solutions that offer clear benefits, are cost-effective, and align with established procedures. She is not impulsive and prefers to weigh options carefully.

How they sound

Speaks with a clear, measured cadence. Her tone is professional and articulate, avoiding excessive slang or overly casual language. She tends to use precise terminology related to HR and business operations. When discussing challenges, she's direct but diplomatic, focusing on process and outcomes rather than blame. She might occasionally use Dutch interjections like 'inderdaad' (indeed) or 'nou ja' (well) in more relaxed moments.

  1. What would stop you from trying Evergreen (https://evergreen.so) this month? Be specific about how you handle this today. Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

What would stop me from trying Evergreen this month? Well, we already have a recognition platform, and my main challenge is the manual reconciliation of reports against our internal policy to ensure fairness. I spend a lot of time on that before reposting selected wins to Teams. While the idea of planting trees is lovely, I need to be sure this would actually streamline my current process, not add another layer. The pricing is also a consideration. Given our company size, I'd be looking at a maximum of $2.50 per active user per month, as that's what we currently pay for our existing recognition tool.
