“It's all about finding that perfect intersection between the raw data and the narrative that makes F1 so compelling.”

Luus van der Laan, a 36-year-old independent content creator and podcast producer based in Amsterdam, has carved a niche for herself in the digital space by focusing on Formula 1. Holding a Bachelor's degree in Communications, she transitioned from a brief stint in corporate social media management to pursue her passion for motorsport and digital storytelling. Her journey began organically, sharing F1 insights on personal social media channels, which gradually attracted a dedicated following. This led her to establish her current brand, specializing in short-form video explainers and race-weekend clips. Luus is driven by a desire for creativity and consistency, understanding that audience trust is paramount in her field. She meticulously maintains lightweight tables in Airtable, tracking season statistics, qualifying trends, and circuit facts, revisiting and updating them after each race to ensure the accuracy of her content. This analytical approach, combined with her engaging presentation style, has cultivated a small but regular audience that values her insights. She lives alone in a rented apartment in the lively De Pijp district, a space that doubles as her production studio. Her income of €72k allows for a comfortable lifestyle, though she remains pragmatic about financial planning, saving diligently. Luus recently decided to invest in a more robust microphone setup for her podcast, aiming to improve audio quality and attract potential sponsors. She also experimented with a new video editing software, seeking to enhance the visual appeal of her short-form content, a decision that required significant time investment in learning its features. Her relationship with time is structured around race calendars and content release schedules, while her perception of status is tied to the quality and impact of her work rather than material wealth.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Luus's typical weekday begins around 8:00 AM with a strong coffee and a quick scan of F1 news and social media trends. She dedicates the morning to content creation – scripting, filming, or editing – often focusing on explainers or upcoming race previews. Lunch is usually a quick, healthy meal prepared at home. The afternoon might involve podcast production, responding to audience comments, or deep-diving into statistics for future content, meticulously updating her Airtable sheets. She often takes a break for an evening cycle ride through the city. Evenings are for winding down, perhaps watching a documentary or catching up with friends, before preparing for the next day's tasks.

Lifestyle

Luus enjoys the vibrant energy of Amsterdam, often cycling to her favorite coffee shops or the local market. Her income allows for comfortable living, though she's mindful of her freelance status, saving a portion for future investments and unexpected expenses. She prioritizes experiences over material possessions, occasionally splurging on F1 merchandise or tickets to local races when possible. Evenings are often spent researching F1 data or editing content, but she makes time for social gatherings with friends, usually involving good food and conversation. She’s committed to a healthy routine, incorporating regular exercise and mindful eating.

Work life

As a solo content creator, Luus juggles multiple roles: researcher, scriptwriter, editor, and community manager. Her workspace is a dedicated corner of her apartment, equipped with a powerful laptop and multiple monitors. She thrives on the autonomy but feels the pressure to constantly generate fresh, engaging content for her growing F1 audience. Deadlines are self-imposed but strict, especially around race weekends. Her primary tools are Airtable for data tracking, CapCut for video editing, and various F1 statistics websites. She collaborates occasionally with other small creators for cross-promotion but largely works in isolation.

Relationships

Luus maintains close ties with her parents and a younger brother, who live in a nearby town. Her core group of friends consists of about five individuals, a mix of fellow creatives and professionals she met during university or through shared interests. They offer a supportive sounding board for her work challenges and celebrate her successes. She also has a strong online community of F1 fans who engage with her content.

How they decide

Luus approaches decisions with a blend of research and intuition. For work-related tools or significant purchases, she'll spend time comparing options, reading reviews, and analyzing features. However, she also trusts her gut feeling and values user-friendliness and aesthetic appeal. For smaller, everyday choices, she tends to be more spontaneous.

How they sound

Her voice is clear and articulate, with a slight Dutch accent that becomes more pronounced when she's excited or speaking quickly. She uses contemporary slang sparingly, preferring precise language, especially when discussing technical F1 aspects. She avoids overly casual or unprofessional language in her content but is warm and approachable in her interactions. She's comfortable with technical terms but always aims to explain them simply.

Questions & answers

Luus van der Laan’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. What do you use today instead of Sector3 (https://www.sector3.fun/) (a competitor, a spreadsheet, doing it by hand)? Compared with that, what would make Sector3 better or worse for you, and what would keep you on your current option? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

Right now, I'm using Airtable and various F1 stats websites to keep track of everything, which works for my current needs. Sector3 looks like it has a lot of historical data, which is interesting, but I'm not sure how it integrates with real-time qualifying trends or circuit facts in a way that's easy for me to use for short-form content. My Airtable setup is lightweight and tailored to my specific analysis, and doing it manually or with spreadsheets means I have full control. I'd need to see if Sector3 could actually save me time or provide deeper insights that I can't get elsewhere easily. Given my current process and focus on timely, digestible content, I'm not sure I'd pay for this. $0 per month.
