“The real magic isn't just finding the right person for a job; it's building a system that lets you focus on that magic, instead of drowning in the paperwork.”

Patti Rempel, 52, is the founder and driving force behind a boutique recruiting services firm based in Seattle. Her journey into entrepreneurship wasn't a straight line; after earning a BA in Sociology, she spent nearly two decades in various HR and talent acquisition roles within larger tech companies. This experience provided her with a deep understanding of hiring dynamics, but also exposed the inefficiencies and bureaucratic hurdles that often hampered effective recruitment. Frustrated by the limitations of corporate structures, she decided to strike out on her own seven years ago, founding her own firm with a focus on personalized, high-touch recruiting. She bootstrapped the business, initially handling everything herself, and has gradually built a small, dedicated team of three. Patti lives alone in a condo, maintaining a disciplined approach to her finances, viewing her current income range as a necessary phase of business growth rather than a reflection of her ultimate earning potential. Her sociology background continues to inform her approach, emphasizing understanding human behavior and organizational dynamics. She's an early adopter of productivity tools, particularly those leveraging AI, seeing them as essential for a small firm to compete with larger players. Her current setup relies heavily on an AI assistant for managing the sheer volume of candidate communications and scheduling, a deliberate choice to maximize her own time for strategic client engagement and complex candidate assessments. She recently invested in upgrading their CRM system and is actively researching more sophisticated AI applications to further streamline operations, always with an eye toward maintaining the quality and personal touch that defines her company's brand. Her work-life boundaries are important; while dedicated, she consciously carves out time for personal well-being and avoids the 'always-on' culture she witnessed in her previous corporate life.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Patti's typical weekday begins around 6:30 AM with a brisk walk along the waterfront or a quick yoga session at home. By 8:00 AM, she's at her home office, sipping coffee and reviewing the AI assistant's summary of overnight emails and candidate interactions. She spends the next few hours on strategic client calls, refining job descriptions, and conducting interviews. Lunch is usually a quick, healthy meal at her desk while scanning industry news. The afternoon involves team check-ins, reviewing candidate pipelines, and responding to more complex client inquiries. She aims to wrap up by 6:00 PM, often followed by an industry webinar or networking event a couple of times a week. Evenings are for decompressing, perhaps reading or catching up with friends.

Lifestyle

Patti lives in a comfortable but not ostentatious condo in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood. Her income allows for a stable life, but she's mindful of expenses, preferring to reinvest in her business. She prioritizes her health, aiming for a morning walk or yoga session before diving into work. Her social life is a mix of industry networking events and quiet evenings with a close-knit group of friends. She enjoys exploring Seattle's food scene and occasionally attends local theater productions. Financial discipline is key; she tracks her spending and avoids unnecessary debt, viewing her current income as a stepping stone rather than a final destination.

Work life

As the founder of a 3-person recruiting firm, Patti's days are a constant juggle. She's deeply involved in client relationships and candidate sourcing, but her AI assistant handles the initial deluge of applications and scheduling, freeing her for more strategic tasks. Her two employees, a junior recruiter and an operations assistant, rely on her direction. The pressure to grow the business while maintaining quality is ever-present. She spends significant time refining her AI's prompts and reviewing its output, always looking for ways to optimize workflows without compromising the human touch essential in recruiting. Recent decisions involve investing in better CRM software and exploring more advanced AI integrations.

Relationships

Patti is divorced and has a good, albeit distant, relationship with her adult daughter who lives on the East Coast. Her primary social circle consists of a few long-time friends, mostly professionals she met through networking or university. She values their honest feedback and occasional venting sessions. Within her company, she fosters a collaborative environment, relying on her team's input while maintaining ultimate decision-making authority.

How they decide

Patti is a methodical decision-maker. She gathers information, weighs pros and cons, and often seeks input from trusted peers or industry resources before committing. She's not impulsive but will act decisively once she's confident in a direction. She's willing to experiment with new tools and processes but requires a clear understanding of their value proposition and potential impact on her business.

How they sound

Patti speaks with a clear, measured cadence, reflecting her thoughtful nature. Her tone is generally professional but warm, especially when discussing candidates or her team. She avoids overly casual slang but isn't stiff; she uses industry-specific terms naturally. She tends to frame things in terms of efficiency and practical outcomes. She's articulate and direct, preferring to get to the point without unnecessary embellishment.

Questions & answers

Patti Rempel’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. Looking at Robotomail (https://robotomail.com/): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

Robotomail offers a way to give my AI assistant its own email address, which sounds intriguing for sorting candidate replies. The $5/mo Solo plan with 500 sends/receives seems a bit low for my volume, but it's a good starting point. If it could handle more, say 5,000 sends and receives for around $20-$30 a month, that would be a no-brainer. Anything over $50 a month for those limits, and I'd likely pass, as I'm trying to keep costs down while I grow.
