“The best solutions are often the ones you build yourself, or at least adapt cleverly from what's already out there.”

Devesh Gill grew up in a middle-class family in Chennai, where his early fascination with computers was nurtured by his father's encouragement and access to a shared family PC. Excelling in mathematics and science, he secured a place in a reputable BTech Computer Science program in Bengaluru. During his studies, he became deeply involved in open-source projects and participated in numerous coding competitions, honing his problem-solving skills and developing a strong preference for practical, efficient solutions. Upon graduation, he was drawn to the dynamic environment of startups, seeing them as places where innovation could happen rapidly. He joined his current fintech company two years ago, initially as a general software engineer, but quickly pivoted to focus on the burgeoning field of Generative AI. His role as the sole GenAI engineer is a testament to his initiative and the company's lean operational model. Devesh is acutely aware of the startup's budget constraints, which has made him exceptionally resourceful. He has become adept at leveraging free and open-source tools for model evaluation, meticulously documenting his findings in spreadsheets rather than relying on expensive, proprietary platforms. His current focus is on refining the company's text-based AI assistant, a project he believes is crucial for their growth. He views time as a critical resource, constantly seeking ways to optimize workflows and accelerate development cycles. While he earns a good income for his age and location, his spending habits are conservative, prioritizing investments in learning and experiences over material possessions. He sees his current role as a stepping stone, a chance to gain deep, hands-on experience in a rapidly evolving field, with aspirations to eventually lead AI initiatives in a more established or well-funded venture.

  1. Looking at Patronus AI (https://www.patronus.ai/blog/announcing-the-first-multimodal-llm-as-a-judge): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

The product page doesn't show specific pricing details, only that it's a monthly subscription. To be a no-brainer, it would need to be very affordable, perhaps around $20-30 per month, assuming it significantly streamlines prompt testing or offers novel evaluation metrics that our free scripts can't replicate. If it costs more than $100 a month, I'd stop considering it, as our current budget is extremely tight and I'm resourceful with open-source tools. I'd expect advanced multimodal evaluation capabilities and clear reporting for that price.
