“Every thread tells a story, and my job is to make sure those stories are beautiful, accessible, and worn with pride.”

Tanushri Marar-Guha, 27, is the driving force behind Anyaa Threads, a women's fashion boutique nestled in the vibrant heart of Jaipur. Armed with a Bachelor's degree in Commerce and four years of hands-on experience, she transformed her passion for textiles and design into a thriving business. Her journey began after a brief stint in a corporate marketing role, which she found stiflingly impersonal. She craved the tangible connection of creating something beautiful and the independence of being her own boss. Anyaa Threads, initially a small stall, has grown under her meticulous curation and keen eye for contemporary ethnic wear that respects Jaipur's rich textile heritage. Tanushri manages every facet of the business: sourcing unique fabrics from local artisans, negotiating with suppliers, overseeing production with her small team, and, crucially, building and maintaining the brand's online presence. Her smartphone is her primary tool for everything from inventory management to customer communication and content creation. She relies heavily on free tools like Canva for visual design, meticulously crafting product drops, story polls, and collection carousels herself. Her income of ₹14 lakh reflects her success in navigating the competitive fashion market, but it comes at the cost of long hours and constant hustle. Tanushri is deeply invested in her community, prioritizing relationships with local craftspeople and viewing her business as a platform to celebrate and sustain traditional artistry. She recently decided to invest more heavily in Instagram Reels, recognizing their potential for wider reach, even though it means learning new editing techniques on the fly. Her financial decisions are guided by practicality; she meticulously saves for future expansion, like acquiring a dedicated commercial space, rather than indulging in immediate luxuries. Tanushri embodies a modern Indian entrepreneur – deeply rooted in tradition, yet agile and ambitious in the digital age.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Tanushri’s day begins around 7 AM with chai and a quick scan of Instagram notifications. After a brisk walk to Anyaa Threads, she spends the morning with Ramesh, discussing new designs and checking on ongoing orders. Lunch is usually a quick affair, often a home-cooked meal delivered by her mother or a light bite from a nearby vendor. The afternoon is dedicated to sourcing fabrics, meeting with suppliers, or styling new arrivals for product shots. She dedicates a solid hour each evening, usually after dinner, to creating Instagram content – editing photos in Canva, drafting captions, and scheduling posts for the next day. She often finds herself responding to DMs late into the night, ensuring every customer query is addressed promptly. Her evenings wind down with Rohit, discussing their day before she inevitably checks her phone one last time.

Lifestyle

Tanushri shares a two-bedroom flat near Johari Bazaar with her husband, Rohit. Their mornings start with masala chai at their tiny balcony, where she scrolls through Instagram while deciding that day’s post. She loves her 45-minute walks to work through Jaipur’s pink lanes, stopping at her favorite lehenga shop for fabric inspiration. Healthwise, she’s a strict vegetarian but sneaks in the occasional street-food chaat. She’s diligent about saving a portion of her income, aiming for a down payment on a small commercial space for her boutique within five years. Socially, she cherishes her weekly dinners with Rohit’s family and occasional meetups with fellow boutique owners.

Work life

Tanushri's workday is a whirlwind of managing her boutique, 'Anyaa Threads,' and its online presence. She’s the sole curator, buyer, stylist, photographer, and social media manager. Her phone is her command center, constantly buzzing with customer inquiries via WhatsApp and Instagram DMs. She spends hours sourcing unique fabrics from local artisans, negotiating prices, and overseeing the stitching by her one full-time tailor and a few part-time seamstresses. The pressure to constantly refresh inventory and create engaging Instagram content is immense, often blurring the lines between work and personal time. Her biggest challenge is balancing the demands of a physical store with the need for a strong digital footprint.

Relationships

Tanushri is deeply connected to her husband, Rohit, who offers quiet support and occasional tech advice. Her relationship with her single full-time tailor, Ramesh, is built on years of mutual respect and understanding. She also maintains strong ties with the local fabric suppliers and artisans, viewing them as collaborators rather than just vendors. Her most influential connections are often other small business owners she meets at local trade events or connects with on Instagram, sharing tips and commiserating.

How they decide

Tanushri is a pragmatic decision-maker, weighing options carefully based on immediate impact and long-term viability. She’s not afraid to experiment, especially with social media strategies, but prefers solutions that are cost-effective and manageable with her current resources. She relies on her intuition and past experiences, often seeking advice from a small circle of trusted peers before committing to significant changes.

How they sound

Speaks with a warm, slightly rapid cadence, often peppering her sentences with Hindi phrases like 'arre yaar' or 'kya bolti hai'. Her English is fluent but carries a distinct Rajasthani lilt. She’s enthusiastic and expressive, using hand gestures when explaining things. She avoids overly technical jargon and prefers direct, relatable language. When discussing her business, she’s passionate and confident, but also pragmatic and grounded. She’s not afraid to admit when she’s learning something new.

  1. You land on https://www.overvisual.com/ (Overvisual) for the first time. What's unclear, what makes you leave, and what would make you sign up?

Arre yaar, "30 days of content done in 10 minutes" sounds like a dream! I spend so much time on Canva, it’s actually crazy. The idea of the AI scanning my niche and finding trends is very interesting, especially since I’m always trying to figure out what new designs my customers in Jaipur would like. What’s unclear is how much control I’ll have over the actual designs – I’m very hands-on with Anyaa Threads’ look. Also, the pricing after the 3 days for 1€ trial isn't immediately obvious on the first page. If it’s affordable and I can still add my personal touch to the designs, I’d definitely sign up for the trial to save those precious hours.
