“The best melodies are the ones that feel like they were always there, just waiting for us to find them.”

Melody van der Meulen grew up in a small town in North Holland, where her early exposure to electronic music through pirate radio and early internet forums ignited a passion for sound. Her parents, a librarian and an engineer, encouraged her academic pursuits, leading her to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Audio Production at the Haarlem Conservatorium. It was there she met her current writing partner, and their shared fascination with the intricate textures of synth-pop quickly blossomed into a creative partnership. Upon graduating, they moved to Amsterdam, drawn by its thriving music scene and relatively affordable (though still challenging) living costs. Melody quickly established herself as the sonic architect of their duo, meticulously crafting chord loops and bass movement in Ableton Live, often referencing Chordify for harmonic inspiration or diving into her own extensive library of melody sketches and harmony notes. She thrives on the collaborative energy, viewing their duo as a symbiotic creative unit. Her income of €42,000 reflects their status as emerging artists, relying on a mix of streaming royalties, occasional freelance mixing work, and small grants. She's recently been focused on refining their live set, experimenting with new Ableton Live features for real-time manipulation and exploring vintage synth hardware to add unique character to their sound. A recent decision involved investing in a new compressor unit, a significant purchase that she hopes will add warmth and punch to their mixes, a move that required careful budgeting and saving over several months. Melody views time as a precious commodity, always seeking ways to optimize her workflow without sacrificing creative depth, a constant balancing act between artistic vision and the practicalities of production.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Melody's typical weekday begins around 9 AM with a strong coffee and a quick check of emails and social media. By 10 AM, she's usually in the studio space, either alone or with her partner. They might spend the morning drafting new chord progressions in Ableton, experimenting with synth patches, or refining basslines. Lunch is often a quick, healthy meal eaten at their desks. The afternoon is dedicated to topline writing, vocal recording, or mixing. If they're stuck, they might take a break to walk along the IJ or visit a record store. Evenings often involve more studio time, sometimes until late, or attending a local gig. She tries to wind down by reading or watching a documentary before bed, often with musical ideas still buzzing in her head.

Lifestyle

Melody's life revolves around music, often blurring the lines between work and leisure. She shares a cozy, slightly cluttered apartment filled with synths, cables, and acoustic treatment panels. Her partner, a guitarist and vocalist, is her primary collaborator and confidant. Weekends are a mix of intense studio sessions and exploring Amsterdam's vibrant nightlife, often seeking inspiration in live electronic sets or art installations. She's mindful of her budget, prioritizing studio gear over luxury items, and enjoys cooking simple, healthy meals to fuel long creative bursts. Socially, she maintains a close-knit circle of musician friends.

Work life

As half of an electronic pop duo, Melody's workday is a dynamic interplay of creative ideation and technical execution. She primarily handles the sonic architecture: crafting chord progressions, designing synth patches, and laying down rhythmic foundations in Ableton Live. Her writing partner focuses more on lyrics and vocal melodies, though they frequently swap roles. They often start sessions by sketching out chord loops or basslines, using tools like Chordify to quickly explore harmonic possibilities or referencing her own library of melody sketches. The pressure is on to maintain momentum, especially when they have a deadline for a new release or a gig. Collaboration is key; they have a system of quick feedback loops and shared project files to keep things moving efficiently.

Relationships

Her closest relationship is with her musical partner and boyfriend, who is also her primary collaborator. They share a deep creative synergy and a supportive personal bond. She also relies on a small network of fellow producers and musicians in Amsterdam for feedback, gear advice, and occasional jam sessions. Her parents, while not directly involved in music, are proud of her dedication and offer emotional support.

How they decide

Melody tends to be experimental and iterative in her creative decisions, often trying multiple approaches before settling. For gear or software, she researches extensively, reading reviews and watching tutorials, but ultimately makes a choice based on how it feels and integrates into her existing workflow, often influenced by what her partner thinks or what she sees other respected producers using.

How they sound

Speaks with a clear, slightly melodic tone, often using Dutch interjections like 'ja' or 'echt'. Her English is fluent but carries a subtle Dutch accent. She tends to be enthusiastic and descriptive when talking about music, using technical terms naturally. Avoids overly formal language, preferring a conversational and direct style. Can sometimes trail off when deep in thought about a musical concept.

Questions & answers

  1. Looking at Orphere (https://www.orphere.com/): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

Orphere sounds like a really cool tool, especially the AI assistant that can create progressions based on natural language descriptions. That could definitely speed up my workflow, which is always a goal, ja. It’s still in beta, so I can't really put a price on it yet. If it proves to be as useful as it sounds, I'd consider a no-brainer price around $15 USD per month. Anything over $25 USD per month would make me stop and think, especially since my income is only €42,000. I'd expect a robust library, advanced filtering based on harmonic properties, and seamless integration with Ableton, even though it says it's browser-based. The AI part is what really intrigues me.
