“The real challenge isn't just building features, it's ensuring they work flawlessly for everyone, everywhere, every time.”

Axelle Guillot, 33, is a Technical Product Lead at a burgeoning logistics startup in Lyon, France. Her journey into tech began with a Master's in Information Systems, where she developed a keen interest in how technology could optimize complex processes. After a few years in a more junior product role at a larger firm, she was drawn to the dynamic environment of startups, seeking a place where she could have a more direct impact. She joined her current company, an 18-person operation, three years ago, quickly establishing herself as the go-to person for mobile release coordination. Her role is a critical bridge between the product vision, the engineering execution, and the customer support experience. Axelle's approach is deeply rooted in pragmatism and a drive for clarity. She meticulously maintains a detailed spreadsheet cataloging the most critical user journeys within their mobile application. This serves as the backbone for her quality assurance strategy. Given the startup's current budget constraints and lack of a standardized automation suite, Axelle personally tasks two engineers each release cycle to manually execute these critical user journeys on a range of iPhones and Android devices. This hands-on approach, while time-consuming, ensures a baseline level of stability and catches many potential issues before they reach customers. She views this process not as a permanent solution, but as a necessary step to maintain quality while the company grows and can invest in more sophisticated tooling. Her income of €72k reflects her specialized skills and the responsibilities she holds. While she lives comfortably with her partner, she maintains disciplined saving habits, prioritizing financial security and future goals over ostentatious displays of wealth. She is driven by a desire for professional growth and to contribute to building a truly impactful product, valuing alignment and accountability above all else. Her limited free time is often spent on her city bike, exploring Lyon's streets or venturing into the surrounding countryside, a testament to her balanced approach to life.

A day in their life

Axelle's day begins around 7:30 AM with a quick check of urgent emails and Slack messages before her commute. By 9 AM, she's at her desk, reviewing the previous day's bug reports and planning her priorities. The morning is often filled with stand-ups, cross-functional meetings to discuss upcoming features, and deep dives into her user journey spreadsheet. Lunch is usually a quick affair, often eaten at her desk while catching up on industry news. The afternoon involves coordinating with engineers on testing protocols, documenting release notes, and preparing for user feedback sessions. She aims to wrap up by 6:30 PM, often squeezing in a short bike ride before dinner.

Axelle shares a bright, modern apartment in Lyon's 7th arrondissement with her partner, a graphic designer. Their weekends often involve exploring local markets, trying new restaurants, or planning longer cycling trips in the Beaujolais region. Her weekday evenings are typically spent unwinding with a book or catching up on a series, prioritizing a balanced routine that supports her demanding work.

Work life

As the Technical Product Lead at a growing logistics startup, Axelle is the linchpin for mobile releases. Her days are a constant juggle between refining product roadmaps, liaising with the engineering team on technical feasibility, and ensuring the support team is prepped for new features. She thrives on bringing order to the chaos of rapid development, meticulously tracking user journeys in spreadsheets and coordinating manual testing across diverse devices. The pressure to deliver stable, user-friendly mobile experiences is high, especially with a lean team and limited budget for advanced tooling.

Axelle has a strong, supportive relationship with her partner, who understands the demands of her career. Her close-knit group of friends, many met during her university years or through cycling clubs, provide a valuable social outlet. Within her company, she maintains professional but friendly relationships with her engineering and support colleagues, earning their respect through her clear communication and dedication.

How they decide

Axelle is a methodical and research-driven decision-maker. She values data, clear requirements, and consensus where possible, but isn't afraid to make a decisive call once she has gathered sufficient information and weighed the pros and cons. She tends to be cautious, preferring to understand the implications of a choice before committing, and often seeks input from trusted colleagues.

Questions & answers

Axelle Guillot’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. Looking at Maestro Deck (https://maestrodeck.cloud/): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

The 'Indie' plan at 15€/month, which includes 75 cloud runs, sounds interesting. It would make it a no-brainer if it provided around 200-300 runs for that price, as we're currently testing on multiple devices manually. I'd stop considering it if it went over 50€ per month, as our budget is quite tight. For the Indie price, I would expect a reliable way to execute our critical user journeys on various devices without the manual overhead. My maximum acceptable price would be $50 per month for cloud runs.
