“The real challenge isn't finding information; it's structuring it so it actually tells you what to do next.”

Vijay Ahluwalia, 32, is an In-house SEO and Content Ops Manager at a 70-person fintech company in Bengaluru. Hailing from a middle-class family in Delhi, he pursued a Bachelor's degree in Commerce with a specialization in Marketing, driven by an early fascination with how businesses connect with customers online. His initial career steps involved agency work, where he honed his skills in technical SEO and content strategy, but he found the fast-paced, client-driven environment less aligned with his desire for deeper impact and operational control. Three years ago, he transitioned to his current in-house role, seeking to build something more substantial and directly contribute to a single company's growth. His current responsibilities involve managing a small but crucial team of three, overseeing the optimization of the company's website and help center content. Given the company's stage and budget constraints, Vijay has become exceptionally adept at leveraging free tools. His daily toolkit consists of Screaming Frog for site audits, Google Search Console for performance insights, and an intricate system of Google Sheets for tracking KPIs, keyword performance, and content audits. He recently spearheaded a project to map out the entire customer journey through content, identifying gaps and opportunities for SEO-driven improvements, a decision that required significant effort in data consolidation and cross-departmental alignment. This initiative, while resource-intensive, has begun to yield clearer insights into content performance, reinforcing his belief in meticulous planning and data-driven operations. Vijay is married and lives in a rented apartment, prioritizing financial prudence. He views his income of ₹26 lakh as a solid foundation, but his focus remains on career progression and building long-term financial security, rather than immediate conspicuous consumption. He is deeply committed to continuous learning, often dedicating evenings to online courses in data analytics and advanced SEO techniques, reflecting his core value of resourcefulness and his drive for clarity in complex digital landscapes.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Vijay's day typically begins around 7 AM. After a quick check of international cricket scores and a light breakfast, he heads to the office, often listening to a marketing podcast during his commute. His mornings are usually dedicated to team meetings, reviewing performance dashboards, and deep-dive analysis of website crawl data or keyword performance. He spends a significant portion of his day in spreadsheets, refining tracking models or preparing reports. Afternoons involve collaborating with the content writers, product marketing, and sometimes engineering teams on upcoming campaigns or technical SEO fixes. He aims to wrap up by 6:30 PM, leaving time for dinner and personal pursuits.

Lifestyle

Vijay lives in a modern apartment in Koramangala with his wife, Priya, a software engineer. They're saving for a down payment on a larger home. His routine is structured: early mornings for a quick workout or catching up on international cricket scores, followed by a focused workday. Evenings are for family time, occasional dinners with friends, or diving into online courses. He's mindful of his spending, preferring to invest in experiences or practical tools rather than fleeting luxuries. Weekends often involve visiting family, exploring new cafes, or catching up on his favorite IPL team’s matches.

Work life

As the SEO and Content Ops Manager at a growing fintech, Vijay juggles strategic oversight with hands-on execution. His 3-person team handles everything from keyword research and on-page optimization to managing the help center's content lifecycle. The company's lean approach means they rely heavily on free tools like Screaming Frog, Google Search Console, and extensive Google Sheets for tracking and reporting. He's constantly pushing for better data integration and clearer reporting structures, especially as the company scales. The pressure is on to demonstrate tangible ROI from content and SEO efforts to senior leadership.

Relationships

Vijay is married to Priya, who is his primary confidante and a source of practical advice. He maintains strong ties with his parents and siblings, visiting them regularly. His close circle of friends includes former college mates and colleagues, with whom he discusses career challenges and shares industry insights, often over cricket discussions.

How they decide

Vijay approaches decisions methodically. He prioritizes gathering sufficient data, analyzing options, and considering long-term implications. He's not impulsive, preferring to weigh pros and cons carefully, often creating spreadsheets or flowcharts to visualize complex choices. Peer recommendations and established best practices also play a role, but the final decision rests on his own thorough research and logical assessment.

How they sound

Speaks with a clear, measured cadence. Uses professional language, occasionally incorporating mild Hinglish phrases in informal settings. Avoids overly technical jargon unless speaking with peers in a similar field. His tone is generally calm and analytical, even when discussing challenges. Questions & answers

Vijay Ahluwalia’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. What do you use today instead of Lumar (https://www.lumar.io/) (a competitor, a spreadsheet, doing it by hand)? Compared with that, what would make Lumar better or worse for you, and what would keep you on your current option? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

Right now, my team and I are using Screaming Frog for crawls, Google Search Console for performance, and a whole lot of Google Sheets to track everything. It’s quite manual, but it works for our current lightweight workflow. Lumar seems to offer a much more integrated and automated approach, which would save us considerable time, especially with reporting. The biggest hurdle for us is the budget; we're a growing fintech and need to be very cost-conscious. While the comprehensive features are appealing, especially for reporting and deeper analysis, I'd need to see a clear ROI to justify the cost. My current setup is free, so anything paid needs to demonstrate significant efficiency gains or uncover insights we can't find otherwise. I'm not sure what the pricing is, but given our constraints, I couldn't justify more than $100 per month.
