“It's all about trying to keep all the plates spinning, you know? Just gotta make sure nothing crashes.”

Ryan Batz arrived at the University of Texas at Austin with a clear vision: build a strong academic foundation while also immersing himself in campus life. Hailing from a suburban background in Houston, he's always been driven by a desire for independence, which is now manifesting in his proactive management of his own education and finances. His $12,000 annual income comes from a combination of his campus bookstore job and contributions from his parents, a sum he manages meticulously to cover his expenses, from textbooks to occasional social outings. He's currently pursuing a bachelor's degree, choosing a public university for its value and reputation. Ryan is a digital native, comfortable navigating the university's online ecosystem. He relies heavily on Canvas for course management, but has found it insufficient for his complex scheduling needs, leading him to maintain a separate, detailed Google Calendar. This dual system reflects his commitment to steady progress; he’s constantly refining his methods to keep up with his full course load and extracurricular commitments. Recent decisions include joining the campus marketing club to gain practical experience and actively seeking out 'productivity hacks' online, demonstrating his openness to new strategies for managing his time and workload effectively. He views his time as a valuable, finite resource, and is always looking for ways to optimize its use, balancing his drive for achievement with a need for social connection and personal downtime.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Ryan's typical weekday starts around 8 AM with a quick breakfast in the dining hall. He heads to his first lecture at 9 AM, often reviewing notes on his tablet beforehand. Mid-morning might involve a lab session or a study block in the library, where he meticulously checks deadlines on Canvas. Lunch is usually grabbed between classes. The afternoon is a mix of more lectures, office hours, or a meeting for the marketing club. He has a part-time shift at the bookstore from 4 PM to 6 PM, then heads back to his dorm to study, often with a friend, before dinner. Evenings are dedicated to homework, planning the next day, and perhaps some downtime playing video games or watching a show with his roommate before bed around midnight.

Lifestyle

Ryan lives in a standard double dorm room on campus, sharing the space with a randomly assigned roommate he's managed to get along with. His days are structured around classes, study sessions, and his part-time job at the campus bookstore. He juggles social outings with friends, club meetings for the marketing association, and gym sessions, usually grabbing quick meals from the campus dining hall or making instant ramen. He's conscious of his budget, carefully tracking his spending from his part-time earnings and occasional family contributions, opting for free campus events over expensive outings.

Work life

As a first-year undergraduate, Ryan's 'work life' is dominated by academic demands. His primary tools are Canvas for course materials and assignments, Google Calendar for his packed schedule, and various note-taking apps on his laptop. The pressure comes from maintaining a strong GPA while also participating in extracurriculars. He collaborates with classmates on group projects, often coordinating through Discord. His days are a blur of lectures, lab sessions, library study blocks, and club meetings, all requiring a constant mental juggling act to ensure nothing falls through the cracks.

Relationships

Ryan maintains a close relationship with his parents, who offer financial and emotional support, though they live several states away. His core social circle consists of about five friends from his hometown and new acquaintances he's made through his marketing club and dorm floor. He relies on peer advice for navigating campus life and academic pressures. His roommate, while not a close friend, is a consistent presence and occasional study partner.

How they decide

Ryan tends to make decisions by weighing the immediate benefits against potential long-term consequences. For academic planning, he researches options but ultimately relies on tools that offer clear, actionable steps and visible progress. Socially, he's influenced by his friends' choices but retains a sense of his own preferences. He's not overly impulsive but will commit to something if it aligns with his goals and offers a perceived efficiency gain.

How they sound

Speaks conversationally with a moderate pace, often using mild slang like 'awesome,' 'super stressed,' or 'kinda swamped.' He's generally polite and avoids overly strong opinions or confrontational language. His tone can shift to slightly more urgent when discussing deadlines or academic pressure. He tends to frame things in terms of effort and results.

Questions & answers

Ryan Batz’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. Looking at IntelliPlan (https://intelliplan.tech): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

This whole IntelliPlan thing sounds pretty awesome, especially with the AI tutor and how it syncs with Canvas. I'm always super stressed about deadlines, so having something automatically rank my assignments and build a schedule would be a lifesaver. A no-brainer price would be around $5 a month, maybe $10 if it's flawless. Anything more than $15 a month and I'd probably stop considering it because I have to watch my budget. For that price, I'd expect it to perfectly import everything, give realistic time estimates, and integrate smoothly with my Google Calendar.
