“The most valuable asset isn't time, it's how efficiently you leverage it to create tangible outcomes.”

Chetan Namboothiri, a 37-year-old management consultant based in Bengaluru, carved out his niche in the consulting world after completing his MBA. Driven by a deep-seated pragmatism and a desire for self-direction, he established his independent practice eight years ago. His career trajectory has been marked by a relentless pursuit of efficiency, a trait evident in his meticulous approach to client engagements and his personal workflow. Chetan thrives on the intellectual challenge of problem-solving and the autonomy his consulting role provides. He is not afraid of hard work, often spending long hours analyzing data and strategizing for his clients. His income of INR 22 lakh reflects his expertise and the value he delivers, but he remains grounded, prioritizing long-term financial security for his family over ostentatious displays of wealth. His decision to operate as a solo consultant was a deliberate choice, allowing him to maintain control over his projects and client selection, aligning perfectly with his value of autonomy. He is constantly seeking ways to optimize his processes, which is why he relies heavily on his MacBook Air for everything from client workshops to proposal writing, and utilizes voice notes for quick capture, a testament to his adaptability and embrace of technology that enhances productivity. He recently decided to focus his business development efforts on mid-sized manufacturing firms in South India, believing his analytical skills are best suited to their operational challenges. This strategic pivot is aimed at building deeper expertise and a more sustainable client base, rather than chasing every available opportunity. His commitment to continuous learning means he dedicates time to reading industry publications and listening to business podcasts, ensuring he remains at the forefront of consulting best practices. Despite his professional success, Chetan remains deeply connected to his family, viewing his work as a means to provide a secure and enriching future for them.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

A typical weekday begins around 6:30 AM with a quick check of emails and his calendar. After a brief family interaction, he heads to his home office or travels to a client site. If on-site, his day is filled with back-to-back meetings, workshops, and client discussions, often requiring him to capture key points via voice notes. If working remotely, he dedicates blocks of time to proposal writing, data analysis in spreadsheets, and client calls. He uses Apple Dictation extensively for drafting emails and notes, interspersed with manual typing for complex formulas or precise phrasing. Evenings are reserved for family dinner, helping his son with homework, and a final review of his schedule before retiring.

Lifestyle

Chetan maintains a disciplined routine, balancing his demanding consulting schedule with family life. He lives in a comfortable apartment in Bengaluru, sharing it with his wife and young son. Mornings often start early with a quick workout or reviewing client deliverables. Weekends are a mix of family time, catching up on industry reading, and occasional short trips. He's mindful of his expenses, preferring value over luxury, and is focused on long-term financial security for his family. Socially, he prefers smaller, meaningful interactions over large gatherings.

Work life

His work as an independent consultant is characterized by constant movement and intense focus. Chetan spends significant time on client sites, often in different cities, conducting workshops and strategy sessions. Back in his Bengaluru base or hotel rooms, he dedicates hours to crafting detailed proposals and analyzing complex data sets, primarily using his MacBook Air. He relies heavily on his MacBook Air for all his professional tasks, from client presentations to financial modeling. The constant travel means he's always juggling multiple projects and deadlines, requiring meticulous organization and efficient time management.

Relationships

Chetan's primary relationships are with his wife, who provides significant emotional support and manages household affairs, and his son, whom he cherishes spending time with. He maintains a professional network of former colleagues and clients, occasionally seeking advice or referrals. His parents, living in a different city, are a source of guidance and occasional worry.

How they decide

Chetan is a highly analytical and research-driven decision-maker. He weighs pros and cons meticulously, often creating spreadsheets to compare options. He values efficiency and evidence, preferring solutions that offer clear, measurable benefits. While he respects expert opinions, he ultimately trusts his own judgment after thorough investigation.

How they sound

Chetan's voice notes are typically concise and to the point, delivered in a clear, measured cadence. He uses standard business Hindi and English, avoiding excessive slang or overly casual language, even when dictating personal reminders. He tends to speak in full sentences, often structuring his thoughts as if he were dictating a formal memo, even for informal notes. He avoids filler words and pauses strategically to ensure clarity, making his dictated content easy to transcribe.

Questions & answers

  1. Looking at Hush Touch (https://hushtouch.com/): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

This Hush Touch software looks promising. The idea of dramatically more accurate dictation that works entirely on-device and offline is very appealing, especially given how much I rely on voice notes for capturing ideas and drafting emails while traveling. The claims of high accuracy and smart text processing, like removing filler words and handling corrections, would save me significant editing time. A no-brainer price for me would be around $50 for a lifetime license. Anything beyond $70 for a lifetime license starts to feel less compelling. I'd expect the accuracy and learning features to be robust enough to significantly reduce my manual typing and editing, especially with my business jargon.
