“Every new hire is an investment, and my job is to make sure that investment pays off for them and for us.”

Pramila Pilla, at 31, is a dynamic force behind a burgeoning direct-to-consumer apparel brand based in Bengaluru. Holding an MBA in Operations, her career trajectory has been marked by a deliberate move from corporate strategy towards hands-on entrepreneurialship. Four years ago, she co-founded her fashion business, quickly realizing the critical need for efficient HR processes in a growing startup. This led her to take on the dual role of founder and HR administrator, a responsibility she embraces with significant ownership. Her daily reality involves navigating the complexities of managing a team of 13, which fluctuates with seasonal hiring. She's adept at leveraging technology, relying heavily on Zoho People and Zoho Workplace to streamline onboarding, manage employee data, and facilitate communication. Excel remains an indispensable tool for her meticulous tracking of payroll, training, and compliance. Pramila’s personal draw of ₹35 lakh reflects a business that is gaining traction, but her personal spending is often secondary to reinvesting capital back into the company's growth and infrastructure. She lives with her parents and younger brother, a setup that provides a grounding support system and allows her to channel more of her income into her venture. Her recent focus has been on refining the onboarding experience for new staff, aiming to reduce the administrative burden and ensure a more consistent integration, especially for temporary retail roles. She's constantly evaluating her operational workflows, driven by a desire for greater efficiency and a commitment to building a sustainable, people-centric business. Her adaptability is evident in her willingness to wear multiple hats and her proactive approach to problem-solving, whether it's a supply chain hiccup or a new hire's training needs.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Pramila’s typical weekday begins around 6:30 AM with a quick cup of filter coffee and a review of overnight sales and customer service inquiries on her phone. By 8:00 AM, she's on her way to the office, often listening to a business podcast. Her workday is a series of planned and unplanned tasks: managing incoming applications, scheduling interviews, updating employee records in Zoho People, coordinating training modules, and resolving urgent operational issues. She eats a quick lunch at her desk while reviewing marketing performance. The afternoon might involve a team meeting to discuss new collection launches or a deep dive into Excel spreadsheets for payroll reconciliation. She aims to leave by 7:00 PM but often stays later to finalize urgent paperwork before heading home, usually for a family dinner.

Lifestyle

Pramila's life is a carefully orchestrated balance between her demanding role and family responsibilities. She lives in a joint family setup in a well-established Bengaluru neighborhood, sharing her space with her parents and younger brother, a university student. Her mornings are an early start, often involving a quick chai and a scan of overnight sales reports before her commute to the office. Weekends are a mix of catching up on sleep, attending to household chores, and occasionally meeting friends for brunch, though her work often intrudes. She's conscious of her finances, reinvesting most of her earnings back into the business, but allows herself small indulgences like online shopping for unique fashion pieces. Health-wise, she tries to incorporate yoga into her routine, though it's often the first thing to go when deadlines loom.

Work life

As a founder and HR admin, Pramila's workdays are a whirlwind of operational oversight and people management for their 13-person D2C apparel brand. She juggles vendor calls, reviews marketing analytics, and is constantly immersed in onboarding new hires, from seasonal sales staff for pop-up events to full-time designers. Her primary tools are Zoho People for employee records and leave management, Zoho Workplace for team communication and document sharing, and Excel for tracking everything from payroll data to training schedules. The pressure is always on to maintain a smooth workflow, especially with fluctuating seasonal demands, and to ensure every team member, whether in the store or the office, feels supported and integrated.

Relationships

Pramila is deeply connected to her family; her parents' encouragement was crucial in her entrepreneurial journey, and she feels responsible for her younger brother's well-being. Her core group of friends consists of fellow entrepreneurs and professionals she met during her MBA, who offer a vital support network for navigating business challenges. Influences come from industry mentors she connects with through online forums and LinkedIn.

Questions & answers

Pramila Pilla’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. Looking at FirstHR (https://firsthr.app/): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

For a tool like this, I'd consider anything around $50 a month to be a no-brainer, especially if it streamlines the seasonal hiring paperwork. If it goes up to $150 a month, I'd have to really evaluate if the time savings justify the cost. I'd expect it to handle all the document generation, compliance checks, and initial training setup for new hires, especially for our retail staff who come and go. The AI features sound interesting, but I'd need to see how much they actually reduce manual effort. For us, even $75 per month would be the absolute maximum I'd be willing to pay.
