“Every day is a chance to help someone, even if it's just with a kind word or a steady hand. That's what matters.”

Anita Huerta Vera, 30, is a dedicated hospital nurse working in Barcelona, a role she has held for seven years after completing her associate degree. Her life is largely defined by the demanding rhythm of her profession, which often dictates her waking hours and energy levels. She lives with her partner in a comfortable, though not spacious, apartment in a residential neighborhood of Barcelona. Her income is stable but middle-class, requiring careful budgeting to manage household expenses and save for future aspirations like owning a home. Anita's commitment to her patients is profound, driven by a deep-seated value of care and a desire to make a tangible difference. This same practicality extends to her personal life; she values routine and efficiency, finding comfort in predictable structures that allow her to manage her often chaotic work schedule. Her recent decision to actively improve her English stems from a growing need to better assist the increasing number of international patients and to potentially open up future career opportunities, perhaps in specialized units or even abroad. She approaches this goal with her characteristic diligence, using free language apps, watching English TV series with Spanish subtitles, and meticulously updating a physical list of new vocabulary learned after each shift. This method, while earnest, is often interrupted by the unpredictable nature of hospital work, making her progress feel slow and intermittent. She recently considered trying a paid language program but hesitated, weighing the cost against her current budget and the perceived value compared to her existing free tools. Her focus remains on practical application, seeking to learn language that is immediately useful in her daily interactions, both at work and when chatting with relatives overseas.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Anita's typical weekday begins before dawn, with a quick breakfast before heading to the hospital for her 7 AM shift. She spends the morning administering medications, checking vital signs, assisting doctors with procedures, and documenting patient progress. Lunch is often a rushed affair in the staff room. The afternoon involves more patient care, responding to call bells, and handover to the evening shift. If her shift ends early enough and she's not too drained, she might spend 20-30 minutes reviewing her English flashcards or watching a short segment of an English TV show before preparing dinner and winding down. Some evenings involve late shifts, pushing her study time to weekends.

Lifestyle

Anita lives a structured life, balancing her demanding nursing career with her personal commitments. Her days off are precious, often spent catching up with her partner, preparing meals for the week, or attending to household chores. She enjoys simple pleasures like watching a good drama series with her partner or video-calling her cousins in the UK. While not extravagant, she manages her finances carefully, prioritizing savings for potential future travel or home improvements. She values her health, trying to maintain a balanced diet and get enough sleep, though hospital shifts often disrupt this.

Work life

As a nurse in a busy Barcelona hospital, Anita's workdays are a whirlwind of patient care, medication rounds, charting, and collaborating with her team. She's adept at using the hospital's electronic health record system and various medical equipment. The pressure is constant, with unpredictable emergencies and the emotional toll of caring for sick individuals. Her colleagues are a mix of seasoned professionals and newer nurses; they rely on each other for support and efficient teamwork. She often feels a sense of accomplishment after a challenging shift, but also exhaustion.

Relationships

Anita is very close to her immediate family, especially her parents and siblings, and maintains regular contact with cousins living abroad. Her partner is her primary support system, understanding the demands of her job. She has a small circle of close friends, mostly fellow nurses, with whom she shares work experiences and social outings. Her extended family's presence abroad is a significant motivator for her English studies.

How they decide

Anita approaches decisions with a blend of practicality and caution. She thoroughly researches options, especially for significant purchases, and weighs the long-term benefits against the immediate cost. She values reliability and evidence of effectiveness, often seeking recommendations from trusted friends or family before committing. For smaller, everyday choices, she tends to stick with what's familiar and functional.

Questions & answers

Anita Huerta Vera’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. What do you use today instead of ELVocab (https://elvocab.com/) (a competitor, a spreadsheet, doing it by hand)? Compared with that, what would make ELVocab better or worse for you, and what would keep you on your current option? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

Currently, I keep my English words on a notebook I update after my shifts, and I watch TV shows with Spanish subtitles. ELVocab sounds interesting because of the AI-powered word tracking and learning through videos. That would be much better than my current method, which is very manual. I worry it might be too much to learn with my schedule, though. I would need to see the pricing clearly, but for something like this, maybe around $10 USD per month if it really helps me progress consistently.
