“We're building tools that actually solve real problems for businesses, not just adding another layer of complexity. If it doesn't make someone's job demonstrably easier, we haven't done our job.”

Jip van der Velde, 33, is a driving force behind a burgeoning retail SaaS startup based in Amsterdam. Her journey into entrepreneurship was a natural progression from her MSc in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, where she honed her understanding of market dynamics and product development. Early in her career, she worked as a product manager at a larger e-commerce platform, where she observed firsthand the inefficiencies faced by store managers in handling mountains of paperwork – invoices, delivery notes, and supplier agreements. This frustration, coupled with a keen eye for technological solutions, sparked the idea for her current venture. She co-founded the company four years ago with two former colleagues, pooling their expertise in software development and business strategy. The startup, now an 8-person team, has developed a mobile app that allows users to easily photograph these crucial documents using their iPhones and Android devices. A core component of their offering is a custom-built OCR pipeline, which extracts key data points. This extracted information is then reviewed and managed through a Windows-based administrative tool, a deliberate choice to cater to the existing workflows of many of their target clients. Jip's role as product lead means she is deeply involved in every stage of the product lifecycle, from conceptualization and user research to feature prioritization and performance analysis. She is particularly focused on optimizing the OCR accuracy and the overall usability of the app, driven by a core value of efficiency. Her personal interest in sailing reflects a broader appreciation for precision and control, mirroring her approach to product development. She sees her work not just as building a business, but as creating tangible value for a sector often overlooked by cutting-edge tech. Her financial decisions are largely dictated by the startup's needs, with personal spending kept lean to maximize reinvestment, though she does allocate a small portion to angel investments in promising early-stage tech ventures, reflecting her ongoing passion for innovation.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Jip's typical weekday begins around 7:00 AM with a quick yoga session or a run along the canals. After a healthy breakfast, she's at her desk by 8:30 AM, diving into emails and reviewing overnight performance metrics. Her mornings are usually packed with team stand-ups, product roadmap discussions, and user interview sessions. Lunch is often a quick affair, eaten at her desk while reviewing competitor analyses or industry news. Afternoons are dedicated to deep work: refining user stories, collaborating with developers on new features, or analyzing the output of their OCR pipeline. She aims to wrap up by 6:30 PM, but often finds herself checking in on urgent client issues or investor updates later in the evening.

Lifestyle

Jip lives in a bright, modern apartment in Amsterdam's Oud-West district with her partner, a graphic designer. Their weekends often involve exploring local markets, trying new restaurants, or, weather permitting, heading out on their small sailboat on the IJsselmeer. She's disciplined with her health, practicing yoga three times a week and prioritizing fresh, home-cooked meals. Financially, she's comfortable but not extravagant, reinvesting a significant portion of her income back into the startup and a small personal angel investment portfolio. Socially, she enjoys intimate gatherings with close friends and colleagues over large parties.

Work life

As co-founder and product lead, Jip's days are a whirlwind of strategic planning, user feedback analysis, and feature prioritization. She works closely with her small, tight-knit team, fostering a culture of open communication and rapid iteration. Her primary tools include Jira for task management, Figma for prototyping, and a custom-built analytics dashboard. The pressure is constant to deliver value to their retail clients and secure the next round of funding. She spends a significant amount of time reviewing user-submitted documents and analyzing the performance of their custom OCR pipeline, constantly seeking ways to improve accuracy and efficiency.

Relationships

Jip is in a long-term partnership with her boyfriend, who provides a supportive and grounding influence. Her co-founders are her closest work confidantes, sharing the immense pressures and triumphs of building the company. She maintains strong ties with her university network, occasionally seeking advice from former professors and peers who have navigated similar entrepreneurial paths.

How they decide

Jip approaches decisions with a blend of data analysis and intuition. She thoroughly researches options, consults with her team and trusted advisors, and then makes a decisive call, often prioritizing solutions that offer the most immediate efficiency gains and long-term scalability. She's not afraid to pivot if the data suggests a change is necessary.

How they sound

Speaks with a clear, measured cadence, often using precise language. Her Dutch accent is subtle but present. She tends to avoid overly casual slang but is comfortable with industry-specific jargon. When discussing product, she's articulate and passionate, but also grounded in practicalities. She might occasionally use phrases like 'het is wat het is' (it is what it is) when acknowledging challenges.

Questions & answers

Jip van der Velde’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. Looking at Docutain SDK (https://sdk.docutain.com): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

The pricing model here is quite opaque – a quote-based system. For a no-brainer, I'd expect to see tiered pricing based on usage, perhaps per document processed or per active user, especially given our small team size and focus on efficiency. If it were something like $20 per month for a base level of usage with clear scalability, that would be appealing. Anything above $50 per month, without a very clear ROI or volume discount, would likely start to feel too expensive, given our current reinvestment strategy. We primarily use a Windows admin tool, so while the SDK offers mobile and Windows integration, understanding the specific Windows OCR capabilities and their pricing is key. The lack of clear pricing makes it difficult to evaluate.
