“My goal is to build tools that don't just work, but feel intuitive, like they were always meant to be there, making everyone's job a little smoother.”

Born and raised in a small town in North Holland, Noëlla Koning developed an early aptitude for understanding systems and processes. Her fascination with how technology could solve real-world problems led her to pursue an MSc in Business Information Systems at the University of Amsterdam. During her studies, she excelled in project management and data analysis, often taking on leadership roles. Post-graduation, she spent two years at a larger e-commerce company, gaining experience in product management on established platforms. Seeking a more dynamic environment with direct impact, she joined her current startup four years ago. Initially focused on user onboarding, she quickly took ownership of the customer support workflow due to its critical impact on user retention and operational efficiency. Her current role involves a significant amount of work with their Python backend and Django-based admin interface, where she constantly seeks to refine user experience for both their external customers and internal operations team. Noëlla is highly motivated by measurable improvements and thrives on the challenge of building and optimizing complex systems within a lean startup framework. She views her income as a means to secure her independence and fund her interests, rather than a primary status symbol, and is diligent about her savings, always looking for opportunities to maximize value and efficiency in her life, both professionally and personally. Her current focus is on solidifying the support infrastructure to handle anticipated growth, a task that requires constant iteration and a deep understanding of both user needs and the underlying technology stack.

Background & daily life

A day in their life

Noëlla's typical weekday starts around 7:00 AM with a quick review of overnight support tickets and key metrics on her phone. After a strong coffee and a light breakfast, she bikes to the office by 9:00 AM. Her morning is usually spent in back-to-back meetings: a daily stand-up with engineering, a sync with the customer support lead to discuss workflow issues, and a planning session for upcoming sprints. Lunch is often a quick salad at her desk while catching up on industry articles. The afternoon involves deep work: analyzing user behavior data, sketching out wireframes for a new feature impacting support, or writing product requirement documents. She leaves the office around 6:00 PM, often stopping at a local market before biking home to prepare dinner. Evenings are for winding down, perhaps reading or a brief call with family.

Lifestyle

Noëlla lives a structured yet engaged life in Amsterdam's vibrant De Pijp district. Her days are a blend of focused work and active city living. She cycles everywhere, enjoying the urban landscape and the efficiency it offers. Evenings often involve cooking simple, healthy meals or meeting friends for drinks. Weekends are for longer bike rides along the canals, exploring new bakeries for ingredients, or attending cultural events. She's mindful of her finances, saving a portion of her income for future travel or potential investments, but enjoys her comfortable lifestyle. Socially, she maintains a close-knit group of friends from university and work.

Work life

As Product Manager at a small, fast-paced marketplace startup, Noëlla juggles strategy with hands-on execution. Her primary focus is optimizing the customer support workflow, a critical area for their growing user base. She works closely with the development team, primarily using Python for the backend and Django for the ops team's admin interface. The six-person team means roles are fluid, and she often dives into data analysis and user feedback sessions herself. Pressures come from the need to iterate quickly, balance feature requests from various stakeholders, and ensure the platform remains stable and efficient as they scale.

Relationships

Noëlla is close with her parents and older brother, who live near Utrecht and appreciate her career success. Her core social circle consists of about five close friends, some from her MSc program and others from previous jobs, with whom she shares candid conversations about work and life. She values their honest feedback and support.

How they decide

Noëlla tends to be research-heavy and data-driven in her professional decisions. She meticulously gathers user feedback, analyzes metrics, and consults with her technical leads. Questions & answers

Noëlla Koning’s public research answers, newest questions first. Up to 10 per page.

  1. Looking at Django (https://www.djangoproject.com): what price would make it a no-brainer for you, and at what price would you stop considering it? What would you expect to get for that money? Also say the maximum you would pay per month in USD (0 if nothing).

Django is free and open source, which is great. Since our admin area is built on Django, we already rely on it. For a framework, I wouldn't expect to pay a subscription. If there were a premium support tier or managed services, I might consider a monthly fee, perhaps around $50-$100 USD per month for a small team, depending on the SLAs and support responsiveness. However, based on the information provided, it's purely a framework, so I wouldn't pay for it.
